Sorry so boring - Nap question

My DS 33 months still has 2 hour naps. I don't mind but he's going to start pre school in september and is showing no signs of lessening nap length.

I have tried not bothering to put him down but he is very predictable when tired, he goes a bit mad, running and jumping and generally being funny and having fun for 15 mins or so then flakes out and would sleep where he stood, or sat or lay.

If i try to wake him up before the 2 hours he is very very grouchy (can't think where on earth he gets that from ) so i'm reluctant to wake him.

Will it become obvious when he won't need one anymore?

Do they drop them suddenly when they reach 3?

A curse on you for having such a reliable napper .

You might find that pre-school can make an allowance if they are part of a day-nursery as your ds could nap with the under 3's.

DS1 gradually dropped his nap at about 2 and a half but some days even at 3 he just needed a little nap on a beanbag in the corner after lunch or even mid afternoon.

Will he be doing whole days at pre-school or half days so that you could book them for when he is less likely to be napping

My ds in in the "biggies" room (3ish to just before 4) and a few of his friends still have the odd nap. They just go into the story room and have a sleep while chaos reigns around them. seems really odd but seems to work

DS is 3.4 and still has at least an hour and a half. He sounds like your ds, really grumpy and manic if he's tired. Bed time is 8 and he wakes at about 6.30, which is too early for us but I've tried cutting his nap out (or even down) but he is unbearably grumpy by tea time if he doesn't have a decent nap after lunch, won't eat his tea/get in the bath and is generally miserable etc. It's only since his third bday at the start of dec that his naps have become this short, were up to 3 hours- and at weekends if things have been really hectic he would still go for this length of time if I let him.

I'm sure your ds's preschool will be used to children like him, ds's nursery certainly is and although not many still nap at his age some do right up until school age.

Thanks goodness for late nappers

My DS is 4 and he'd still sleep in the afternoon if i let him!

He used to have a couple of hours in the pm till about 2 months ago on the days he wasn't in preschool - but he used to be a pain going off to sleep at night. So i stopped it and he manages fine without one now
