20 Month Old Suddenly won't go in his cot or to sleep

I hope someone can help me. My 20 month old DS has started to scream (and I mean scream) when he gets put to bed. He was ill a week or so ago so I wonder if it's something connected to that but how do I get him back to his good sleeping?
We do bath, wind down, drink, story and bed and he usually settles himself in time and goes to sleep. He has a nightlight in his room.
Now he stands up, tried to get out (time for cot bed I think) and screams. I've tried being tough and leaving him but he was nearly sick the other night and I just can't bare to see him so upset. He's waking early too, sometimes 4.30 a.m. and won't settle.
He won't even go to bed for his nap during the day and I end up taking him for a drive in the car then carrying up to bed just so he gets some sleep.
Any suggestions would be a great help!
