Just turned 2 and not talking

My cousins ds was 2 last week and is not yet talking. He says mummy and daddy but that's about it. He is being referred to salt but there is a 6 month wait.
I recall Tanya b on house of tiny tear aways that they sometimes start to talk more when they are at their most comfortable and confident.
Any body out there who can help and advise her?

I can't offer much comfort - am in a similar situation because my friend's ds was 2 several months ago and does not talk at all. He hasn't been referred though and his mum isn't worrying - she just says he'll talk when he's ready and I'm sure she's right. I do worry about him though...

I can't really help, but just to say that my ds was incredibly late speaking, refused to say much until he was well over 2 and a half.

We could understand what he wanted without the need for him to talk. He is now three and it is amazing how much he talks (too much sometimes.

I hope your cousin doesn't worry too much.

I know that one of my dnephews didn't say much of anything at 2, and his language improved absolutely loads when he moved into the 2-3 room at nursery. Does your cousin's ds have older siblings? How are his motor skills? My ds turns 2 this week and he can say loads but his gross motor skills are quite poor, i.e. he can't jump (although watching him try is hilarious) and has only just started coming down the slide on his own, etc.

I think it varies enormously and is almost certainly nothing to worry about. Are they concerned that he's deaf, or can he obviously hear fine?

DT2 didn't start to talk till he was well over 2. Only in the last few months have others begun... slowly... to understand him. The DTs were 3 in February. I'm not and never have been worried.

From what I understand from my gran is that he stumble into things and falls over - generally clumsy. He has and older half brother and goes to play groups.
I'm currently talking to my auntie about it

if she is anywhere near a surestart/children's centre (and not working 9-5 of course), she could see if they do a Hanen course or similar - these are to help parents communicate with their children. If she can't, the Hanen books are very good for ideas at helping you communicate with your children (www.hanen.org), they are a bit pricey -bout £30 even on ebay, but they are good.

as others have said, it's common for kids to be late talkers, and for it to resolve naturally by about 3, and it's great that he is already on the SALT list, as that means that if there does turn out to be any speech problems, he won't have to start off at the bottom of the waiting list iyswim

www.surestart.gov.uk/surestartservices/settings/funde dsettings/index.cfm?region=EM&auth=141

I'm crap at doing links, but that will link to the surestart/children's centres in the Leics. area. It is perfectly OK for her to phone up SALT dept and ask if they have any general advice/know of any useful parent courses that she could do whilst on the waiting list.

My DD2 was delayed in her speech. She wasnt saying anything at 2. She was referred to speech therapy who monitored her only , no treatment as they said it would prob just be a matter of time. She is now 2 1/2 and in the last 3 months has developed so much. She is talking for england now. Suddenly overnight all the words came tumbling out.
I'm sure this is quite common. Hopefully your cousins DS will be the same

Does he understand? CAn he follow instructions?

Some children just don't .. DD didn't until she was 2 years and 1 month .. not even mummy and daddy

She's 3 now .. won't shut up and fabulous vocabulary / grammatical syntax

DS on the otherhand said first word at 10 months and was talking in small sentences by 18 months

Children really do differ

Tentacles, please tell your cousin not to worry. My eldest DS1 didn't talk till he was nearly 3. He's 13 now and I finding it difficult to shut him up! My DS2 is 2 and says a little more than his elder brother did at this age, he is being refered to a speech therapist but in all honesty I think he'll be absolutely fine.

Tentacles: Have a google for the "I Can" website. This is a charity devoted to helping children communicate. They produce free DVDs on how to encourage your children's language development; I have recently ordered one and found it excellent. They also advise where you can find extra help if it is needed. I hope this is helpful; let me know if you have any problems finding the site, and I will go and look out the official address.

i've read so many threads like this over the last six months cause my ds1 (now 2.8) has been really slow to speak - my dh kept saying not to worry but its been so difficult not to! But you should hear him now - someone at nursery the other day said they think now he's making up for lost time! So tell your cousin that its ok to worry but they really all do it on their own time! I'm sure he's got skills in other places!

Agree with others, would not worry.

DS was the same - was ace at non-verbal communication and getting us to understand what he wanted without talking, so probably that was why he was late - well over 2.

He is now nearly 5 and doing well in Reception.

So would not worry too much, they are all different as others have said.
