When is my 8 month old going to do more than screeching or cooing vowels? My cousin's baby trills his r's like a frenchman, goes dadadada at every opportune moment and is only 5 months old the little rat.... I want more variety!
PS I only said 8 words before I was 3 apparently.

my older two never babbled at all. dd was coversational by 2, ds not until 4. I wouldn't worry too much.
I think the dts started at around that age, they had a word or two by the time they were a year old.

Be careful what you wish for ... before you know it he (she?) will be chattering away non-stop and you will be wishing he had an off-switch

Seriously, it will happen when it does - they are all different, and comparing with other children will just make you insane.

Lol at your description of your cousins baby - my 8month old sounds permanently like a telephone (doing that brrrr sound that phones do) - he goes through phases (about a a day) of doing mamamama, gagagaga but the telephone ringing has been constant since he was about 5 months old and he gets dead excited if you do it back to him (guess in his language, we are conversing ) - like you, a bit of variety wouldn't go amiss!

I agree with raspberry beret. dt1 never shuts up. All day long he jsut runs around naming everything he can see. Everytime he sees me it's 'mummeeeee, mummeeee'. I've taken to shouting 'raviiii' back at him, unfortunately it only encourages him.

DS 10 months is fond of odd babble sounds eg rojo rojo rojo ro which I can't believe will ever become sensible words rather than the more usual b, g, m, d consonants. He can also do a perfect mimic of a dog barking but makes no attempt to mimic any sounds we make. Babies are just plain weird.

LOL at telephone...my 8mo does this, and also growls. I can hear her in her cot growling away like a little lion cub!

I'll swap you. My 19mo calls practically everything "duh". Or occasionally "uh - uh!" I know it will all come, but I share your desire for variety. DD1 had about 30 clear words by now!
