is this normal? (Walking related)

DS turned 14 months a couple of days ago and chose this day to take his first steps. (An enthusastic bottom shuffler at first and recent crawler). If you stand him up and let go he can walk a long way, right across the room and can change direction if he wants to. However, he cannot yet stand up without pulling himself, I mean he does not go from sitting on the floor to standing - will this come later then? Also, if he's cruising he never lets go of the furniture and walks he only does it if you are holding him then let go. He's made very rapid progress quite recently, having not really done anything at all till 100.5/11 months so his trajectory has been different from number 1. Is this normal for early stage walking?

This sounds exactly like my ds who also only really got mobile around 10.5/11 months when he developed an interesting "crab crawl". He also would walk quite well (seemingly) if you let him go in the middle of a room, but didn't let go of furniture or stand himself up.

People would see videos of him "walking" across a room and assume he'd cracked it, but actually it was maybe 6-8 weeks (at least?) from that to him learning to stand himself up from being on the floor. That was the game changer, he was off! Within a week he looked pro.

Your ds sounds completely like mine, which I can only assume is some kind of normal! I don't think you have a thing to worry about :)

Thanks eatsleep! I guess that's the moment I'll have to wait for! It seems a bit unusual to me but I know they all develop differently. He also LOVES shuffling on his bum and I suppose he can't yet see why walking would be preferable!

Mine definitely worked on his crab-crawl for ages before revisiting walking; I don't think he saw the point in crawling over to furniture to pull himself up to walk to a toy when he could just crawl to the toy in the first place! Plus it was still quite new to him when some of his peers had been mobile for ages; perhaps they were bored of it already?

I found it easier not to worry about it than when I worried about him not crawling though; at least I'd SEEN him walk, so I knew he would eventually :)

I thought it was a bit weird too I guess; I thought once they'd taken steps - and we're talking A LOT of steps - they'd just be off! Not my ds, he couldn't have cared less - didn't seem to see the significance :P
