Babies with Flat Head Syndrome

This is the story of my little boy....if anyone elses baby is suffering from anything similar, we are a support group who can help.

"Her son, Cameron, was born two weeks late. He was head-down for a long time whilst she was pregnant, which she feels may be the reason he developed torticollis. His head shape was perfect when he was born, but Sarah noticed on the first night in hospital that he did not turn his head, and she remembers having to turn the cot round so she could see his face.

A few weeks later, she noticed Cameron's head becoming an odd shape and mentioned this to each midwife that visited, as well as to the health visitors and even the doctor who felt Cameron's skull. They all told her that there was nothing to worry about and that his head shape would return to normal. The top of one side of his head was very raised, and his ears were out of alignment. He had a lump on one side of his forehead and the back of his head was completely flat on one side. Sarah was not aware of positional plagiocephaly and kept going back to the health visitors, who were still saying that his head would round on its own.

After nearly three months, Cameron was finally referred to a physiotherapist, who was very useful in helping with exercises to treat his torticollis and repositioning advice. This did improve his head shape a little but by the physio also told her that it was quite late for a baby to start the exercises.

Cameron's head shape and ear alignment were still a cause for concern so Sarah searched on the internet hoping to find some help and discovered that there was actually something she could do about it. She posted her concerns about the lack of support in the UK on a US plagiocephaly forum and received a response from a British parent who referred her to Dr Blecher, whom she emailed immediately. She was able to secure an appointment to have a helmet made and specially fitted for Cameron.
