What time does your 9 year old go to bed??

Had to take DD to the doctors yesterday as she doesn't sleep, goes to be about 8.30 but often come down around 9.30/10 unable to sleep, then gets up at 7 every day. She's a really light sleeper at the best of times but it's starting to affect her during the day and she always looks knackered. Doctor recommended a later bed time, I'm just not sure how late...

children not sleeping can be so exhausting and frustrating for both of you!

My 10 yo DD - also a light sleeper goes down soon after 8 and is up at 7 but she needs lots of sleep and also being a bit obsessive about the link between exercise and insomnia I make her walk at least 2 miles a day (our school run)...

My dd is almost 9 on nights when she's been at sports she's in bed at 8.30 and straight to sleep other nights she's in bed around 7.00 and asleep at 7.30 but she's very active five times a week so needs a lot of rest

I suffer from terrible insomnia, and my children are bad sleepers as well. My 8.5YO goes to bed at 9.30/10pm which everybody thinks is really late, but any earlier she is up and down saying she can't sleep. If I put lights out at 9.30 she goes straight to sleep and her alarm goes off at 8am which is still 10.5 hours sleep which I think is ok. She does go up to bed at 8pm to read/write/draw quietly.

I would try going up at 9.00 to hopefully be asleep by 9.30pm.
My DD (9, yr4) is the same. She now goes up at 9.00 (in PJS beforehand) She has never slept longer than 11 hrs, and most nights sleeps 9.30-10.00 hrs, whatever time she goes to bed.
I have tried putting her to bed at 8.00pm sometimes when I think she is really tired, but she then doesn't fall asleep until 10.00/10.30 so worse off.
At least when she goes up at 9.00 she is usually asleep by 9.20pm.
Good luck

DD's a terrible sleeper too. Recently I have found that if I go up with her and turn off the light and lie there for 30 mins max she will be asleep and then gets 11 hours which means she's in great form the next day. I don't think the lying with her is a long term solution but I'm sick at the moment so it suits me to go to bed. We've been struggling with this for 4 years and have bought good books on it - but so far this is the most successful method - previously letting her listen to an audiobook (something like "Little Women") worked or a playlist that I have compiled specially to be soothing and calm. Lights have to be out though. She goes to bed at 8 - lights out at 9pm.

I would say aim for 8.30pm bed, 9pm lights out ( if they wake at 7am that's still 10hrs)

I would suggest no tv/ laptop/ screen time for min 1 1/2 hours before bed. So 7.30 tv off if usually watches. Then maybe read school book together/ draw/ crafts/ model making/ lego etc for 30 mins until 8pm. 8pm bath/ shower and get ready to be in bed by 8.30pm. Allow them to read a book to themselves for max 30mins with lights dimmed or small lamp.

Would also in courage more excercise in the day if possible ( walk to and from school/ to the shops with you after/ out with friends in garden/ trampoline? Etc)

DD is 8 and was similar...I had to cut ALL sugar out of her diet after 4.00pm so she could have a biscuit or whatever right after school but then no sugar or refined foods at all. Only whole foods. It really helped.

Dd goes at 9 and is awake and cheerful at 7.15

Pretty sure she is awake later but if they are quiet I'm past checking once I've said goodnight

DS is just coming upto 9. He's in bed by 7.30 most nights and asleep by 8. He does have a couple of late nights but no later than 9.

He gets tonnes of exercise and lots of outdoor time. Agree with others on the exercise front but also sunlight can make a difference too. If she's not too keen on exercise would she go swimming with you in the evening or maybe join a martial arts class together?
