3 year old friendships

Ds2 3.7 behaves really erratically with his peers - one minute playing with them and the next saying they aren't his friend. Sometimes he just ignores good friends. He seems to like playing with younger children so he can be in charge. He is still very clingy to me. We went up his friends party at the weekend and he sat on my lap until 15 mins from the end when he warmed up. He goes to nursery 2 full days a week and ds1 is only 17 months older. We also have dd who is 14mths so he is middle child.

Is he only clingy when you are there or does he cry for you when you leave him too?

This sounds like pretty normal behaviour to me tbh, 3 is when they are just finding their feet as far as friendships are concerned. I wouldn't worry too much :)
