spitting food out????

Hiya, i was wondering if anyone had experience or advice you could share with me. MY little boy is 21mnths and for the past 4 months we've had real probs with him spitting food out, not just when he dislikes the taste but also when, he puts too much in or suddenly decides he wants his water or when he's fed up with what he's got in his mouth and wants to try something else on his plate. It doesn't matter whether he's only peckish or really hungry...the pattern stays the same. This means that i can never leave him unattended to just get on and eat, i literally have to give him tiny bits at a time just to make sure some of it goes down. I've tried cutting things up very small, but he then just stuffs loads of it in his mouth to compensate or if I give him things whole, the result is the same, he stuffs the whole thing in, in one go.....either way it comes straight back out after a couple of minuits of trying to get it down. After 4 months it's really getting me down. My friends laugh at me because at lunch when we're out I "pop" teeny weeny sandwiches into his mouth whilst he's playing but if i gave him a larger sandwich to hold he'd either take it apart (which i know is normal) or he'd stuff the whole lot in , chew it for a bit, then spit it out.
Can anyone offer any help or advice.
Thanks, billiejo.x

My ds is the same age and until literally about a week ago was doing just the same! Looking back this went on for about 6 months. Maddening isn't it ? Apart from the horrendous mess, you are no doubt worried about his food intake... Well, all I can say is that mine snapped out of it very quickly over the space of a week or so with no particular strategy on my part, except trying to stay calm. I did find he got easily distracted by too much choice in front of him, so unless for example he made it clear he wanted his beaker alongside his plate on the highchair, I'd keep it next to me. Also I put small portions on his little plate, adding to it quietly when I perhaps would distract him by pointing out a cat or something in the garden.
Good luck!

My dd is the same. She's 2 tomorrow but she's done it for a while now.

I find it's alot easier now because she understands when I tell her not to spit it out.

It is very frustrating though.
