ceilidh? As in a Scottish dance party frequently held after weddings?

I like Astrid & James best out of those names.

Report
minipie · 28/06/2010 10:58

ceilidh is a scottish dance

cairn is a grave

oakley is a sunglasses brand

From your first names, I'd go for Hazel or Heather. Sean is ok.

From your middle names, Allegra and James or Arran.

I like Hazel and Ivy out of your girls. Don't like Scarlett at all, sorry. I just can't stand it.

Boys - I think Sean is a lovely classic and underused name. The other boys names sound a little made up.

But I am quite traditional when it comes to names!

Report
diplodoris · 28/06/2010 11:48

I'd go for Ivy Aurelia from your girls' names. Also like Aurora but think Aurelia fits better with Ivy.

Not sure about the boys' name choices, I prefer some of the middle names to the first names. I'd go for Aaron James.

Girls (first)

ceilidh - not really a name, very likely to be spelt differently by everyone who tries.
hazel - lovely
heather - lovely
ivy - elderly lady
scarlett - might be hard to live up to
shannon - matthews
tara - posh, is it short for something?
verity - like it

(middle)

allegra - sounds like an austin allegro
astrid - like it
aurelia - not sure why, but sounds like one of those names that is used when Bart Simpson phones Moe.
aurora - like it

boys (first)

sean - like it
oakley - sunglasses
cairn - pile of stones
boys (middle)

arran - not sure, agree with CTJ on the spelling.
kyle - jeremy
james - like it
scott - from neighbours (perhaps I am too old)
ryan - naughty
cosmo - way too posh to fit with the other names

Tillyscoutsmum · 28/06/2010 13:04

I like Scarlett, Tara and Verity. I like all of your girl's middle names but none of your boys names (James is ok but a bit dull)

Report
cece · 28/06/2010 13:09

Girls (first)

ceilidh - not how to say it
hazel - bit middle aged but nice
heather - like
ivy - not one I would use but OK
scarlett - not keen
shannon - no, bit council estate
tara - love
verity - love and was on our list for DC3

(m iddle)

allegra
astrid
aurelia
aurora

They are all OK for middle names. I personally like to use names in the middle that belong to family members.

boys (first)

sean - the best of the 3 but still no
oakley - sunglasses!
cairn - er no!

boys (middle)

arran
kyle
james
scott
ryan
cosmo

I like James only from your list of boys names.

BTW my boys both have two middle names and it is fine...

I havent ever seen ceilidh used as a name?

Report
CuppaTeaJanice · 28/06/2010 17:01

Neither have I, tiger, not with that spelling anyway. Kayleigh's probably the closest......

There's also the possibility of some very dodgy initials with some of the above names, depending on your surname obviously. HAG, VAG, SAC etc.

Verity Aurelia

Only you can decide - don't listen to anyone else as it's you who will be yelling it at the back door when they won't come in from playing out! So you need to be totally happy with the name you choose.

Report
cece · 28/06/2010 22:44

Keep your shortlist and wait to meet your little one.

Your might be surprised at what will suit them..

DD got the name that was third on our list, none of the others seemed right for her.

DS1 got a name that wasn't even on our shortlist.

DS2 also got a completely different name to what we had decided on. I still like the name we chose but it didn't suit him.

Report
foreverastudent · 29/06/2010 12:46

Thanks,

I had never heard of Oakley sunglasses, that's off the list then.

Arran (the island) and James have familty connections so 90% chance will use one or both in some way.

Ceilidh is scottish gaelic for a dance. Eilidh is a common name up here so dont think spelling would be so much of a problem.

The though of Cairn getting confused with Ken make me shudder, so that's anothe roff the list.

Hazel seems to be the most popular and was almost DD1's name but she just didn't suit it. Plus it makes me think of a notsonice girl from highschool.

I also quite like Russian names!
