For me, it will forever remind me of Gwendoline Mary from Mallory Towers. Out of the nicknames, I only like Freddie..

Malory Towers. She was horrible.

How is Freddie a nickname for Gwendoline?

No - don't do it - please don't do it.

Even the shortened version of Gwen, they'll get called Gwendoline anyhow and they'll spend the rest of the lives thinking WTF were you thinking.......

especially don't do it if you're not Welsh or have any Welsh connections

I think some people who would have never conceived to call their daughters this will be falling over themselves to give their daughters it because of the Cameron effect.

I know a Gwenhwyfor who had the nn Gwennie. Very unfortunate as gwennie is a fairly derogatory term for something twee where I come from (Wales obviously)

Was that too cryptic! It's the name of one of David Cameron's children.

I like Wendy too, but I know a lovely Wendy (young) so I don't see it as too old!

I can't stand Wendy (and unfortunately it is my middle name).

I absolutely love it! I had a thread which included Gwendoline the other day and actually received quite a few positive responses. I can try to find it and link later if you like!
I can't see how people will be influenced by Cameron's daughter's middle name being a short form of Gwendoline!

theagedparent · 26/06/2010 09:34

I like just Gwen on its own

DD is Gwenno (we're Welsh) but I'm not fussed on Gwendolen/Gwendoline. Gwen is much nicer.
