Take a pin. They're all lovely.

Less keen on Jemima, Martha, Rosalyn, Kirsten. The others are all great. I would pick Clara, Lucy, Eleanor or Charlotte.

I love Jemima. Very different and pretty.

Eliza was on my list, I loved the old fashioned style of it.

Also love Martha and Nancy

Rosalyn, Josephine, Kirsten, Talia, Elizabeth, not keen on.

I'm a Lucy and i've always liked it luckily. My neice is Charlotte and Lotty is such a pretty nn.

Josephine, Eliza or Eleanor (with nn Nell) for me.
Not Jemima...

Actually really like Julia too!

I like Jemima, it's very pretty and not over-used. Many on the list are lovely names but are rather run-of-the-mill these days.

Talia is better spelt the proper way - Thalia and make sure it's pronounced properly.

Taar-lia -with emphasis on the first syllable, not Teh-lia with a short T and emphasis on the second syllable, like one girl I know.

My favourites are Kirsten and Serena. Both elegant, classic, but unusual.

Charlotte - lovely, but lots of them
Clara - unusual and nice
Eleanor - ugly, getting very popular
Eliza - quite nice
Elizabeth - classic, prefer to Eliza
Helena - beautiful!
Jemima - quirky and fun
Josephine - dullish, but alright
Julia - too soon for a Julia revival!
Kirsten - yuk
Lucy - lovely!
Martha - quite nice, getting popular
Nancy - silly name
Rosalyn - very nice
Serena - ok
Talia - lovely!

I adore Josephine and would call another dd that but am noticing it more and more and am worried that it's the next big thing. As dd's name turned out to be in some ways.

Charlotte is ridiculously popular and I've never understood why. Eleanor and Lucy also very popular atm and while they're perfectly okay names and classic in many respects, they will not be the only one. Martha is going to date v quickly too.

Helena, Julia and Eliza are all lovely, classic, slightly underused names.

Serena and Talia (though should it be Thalia I suspect?), I don't like and if I am brutally honest it's because where I am they would be associated with people of a certain socioeconomic status.

Clara and Jemima are nice, Jemima slightly less common than Clara.

Nancy seems to be in the next big thing category. Met two the other day whilst out, both newborns.

Rosalyn I don't like. Elizabeth is okay.

Charlotte - DSD and DSis names. nice but stupidly popular
Clara - not keen
Eleanor - DD's name. I love it but again rising in popularity since i named DD
Eliza - very nice
Elizabeth - I love this and would NN her Betty.
Helena - was very nearly going to use this inseatd of Eleanor.
Jemima - Pretty and under used
Josephine - lovely but i fear will become popular soon
Julia - traditional and pretty without the fear of it becoming over used.
Kirsten - it looks as though it should be a pretty name but imho it just isn't for some reason.
Lucy - love it but popular
Martha - love it but very popular
Nancy - no don't get this one
Rosalyn - very nice twist on the more popular rose/rosie
Serena - no sorry. agree with it being popular of a certain demographic.
Talia - as above

My favourites are Nancy, Eliza, Elizabetha and Clara.

The only ones I actively dislike are Jemima (silly doll's name) Rosalyn (there are much prettier 'Rose' names) and Kirsten (just don't like it - sounds dated and unpleasantly Germanic).

Also, Thalia is a pretty name but I prefer the 'Th' spelling - more classic.

SambuccaKelly · 30/05/2010 12:38

sorry, Elizabeth.

Report

This is really helping! Thank you. I did think that Thalia was the more correct spelling but that she and I would have to explain to people how to pronounce it / spell it all the time. Perhaps I should write it off for that reason. Serena - interesting about the 'demographic' thing - I've never actually met one, it just appealed as ds is really hectic and I was hoping for a calm one!!

I think I'm down to:

Clara
Eliza
Elizabeth
Helena
Jemima (I'm trying to get past the doll and the puddle-duck - and when I do, I LOVE this name!)
Julia
Lucy

Would you say Helen-a or Hel-ay-na? I'm tempted to go for this as classic but not over-used and could have Lena or Nell as nicknames.

Oh, one more:

Louisa - thoughts please.

Psammead - How can Nancy be a 'silly name'? You may not like it - but I don't understand how you can call it or any other name 'silly'?
