These are the only names we both like but im still undecided. What image do these names conjure up and which do you prefer? Could I get away with the nickname Nel for Annabel?

Annabel or Annabelle or Annabella are all lovely and much, much prettier than Penelope, which conjurs up librarian pursed lips to me!

Annabel is a lovely name. I always imagine a very willowy type girl. Successful and very pleasant with adoring parents and life never having been too much of a struggle.
Penelope is quite a posh name but seems more fiesty to me. She is not as pretty as Annabel though just as successful!

I prefer Annabel but I do like Penelope

Nel sounds like a nn for Annabel. Although Annie is nicer than Nel though. Penny is nice too.

Thanks for this. I had thought Annabel could seem like 'trying too hard' if that makes sense and an indulged spoilt girl. I do think its pretty though. I can't shorten it to Annie for various reasons and dont like bel so wanted to use Nel for short. Looks like Penelope, her dad's fav., may be out tho.

Penelope - fabulous. I know a lot of Annabels - either Annies or Bellas. Penelope has attitude. She drives cool cars (a pink Rolls or a wacky races number). Wish I'd thought of that. Or Daphne. Then she could have had a bob and gone to parties with beautiful people.

Nell as nn.

Penelope-old fashioned.

Penelope is a great name. Annabel says wet haddock to me.

Annabel makes me think of the doll, Penelope is nice though, a formal name but with a friendly shortening so it suits all situations.

Penelope is fabulous. She will be funny and cool, and so many cool shortenings (Pen, Penny, Penpots)... so classic.

I have a Penpots. She is only 13 months old but already the coolest kid I know.

Annabel is a bit twee for me.

Penpots is not cool. Oh my goodness. That is about as cool as the WI

I really dislike Annabel so would deff go for Penelope

Both these names are very sweet. However, any child called them round my way would have the crap beaten out of them, I'd imagine. I live amongst a sea of Lexie-Maes and Tylers.....

Annabel is my preferred one. Although I do like Penny as a nn. Sorry, I'm not much help, am I!

Annie is less beat me up than Penny.

Penelope could also be Polly btw. I really like Penny, but spend a penny goes through my head very quickly and I push it out again. I can't help it. So for that reason I prefer Polly as a nn for Penelope.
