Not to everyone's taste I am aware, but these are the two girls names we are trying to choose between.

I already have a Benedict and a Rex

Any thoughts?

Anastasia. Lovely nickname opportunities - Anna, Annie, Sia...

Artemis is way too try hard.

Anastasia. So if she hates it when she's older she can shorten it to Annie.

Anastasia. It's very pretty and elegant without being OTT.

Artemis is a boy's name.

Anastasia is lovely. I prefer it pronounced the Russian way, ie Anna-star-zia rather than Anna-stay-zia. The nickname Sia is great too.

There is a fictional character in a older children's book called 'Artemis Foul' (spelling may be Fowl) that you may want to consider...

I know a female Artemis. Her family are original from Greece. I quite like it.

Both the DSs would have been Anastasia ( with Greek pronunciation, Anna-stas-ia) if they'd not been DSs. I still like like it, but had got it too associated with the DSs by the time I had a DD!

I like Artemis too (and iirc it's mentioned in the Artemis Fowl books that it's actually a girls name)

I heard of an Artemis with the nn Temi..

Anastasia is a great name. I especially love Anya as a nm for Anastasia.

As for Artemis, sorry but I agree nowadays it's more common for a boy (i.e. the male drummer of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band or a relatively well known American football player).

I was surprised to find that Artemis is a girls' name.

I would never think that Artemis was a boys name - it is the name of a Greek goddess. I love the name - it is on my fantasy wish list. A very classical, beautiful name.

I loathe Anastasia. She will end up being called Stacey. Yuk.

I hadn't heard of the goddess Artemis though DeborahDevonshire, so when I looked the name up on a baby names website I was surprised.

Same. And I studied classics at school, oops.

I think it's because everyone I've ever known/heard of called Artemis is/was a man (or a male cat).

Anastasia is lovely but she will probably shorten it later.

Artemis- i love it. She was the 'wild' Greek Godness, tomboy, running in the forests and hunting. If you are not into 'pink and cute' then go for it

I think Artemis goes better with your DC's names as well.

I thought Artemis was a boys name too. How does the name of a Greek goddess become a boys name. Strange. It's a great girls name.

I love Anastasia & wanted to use it if ds2 had been a girl. You will definitely have to decide on a nn you like if you use it though as you won't be able to avoid it being shortened.

I adore the name Artemis. We know a little girl with the name - it never occured to me that it's a boy's name.

Artemis is on my list if I have another DD, though DP can't stand the idea so it's unlikely I'd be able to use it....

Very slightly biased in favour of Anastasia , or even Anastatia.

Florencemaman · 24/04/2010 21:47

Artemis is lovely - classic and femine and unlikely to date.

Anastasia is a little to 'frilly' for me and likely to be always shortened. Not keen on Stacy as nickname.

Anastasia is nice.

Artemis is horrific, sorry.
