I wouldn't use it. Maybe it is an Irish thing or just my family but when someone is in bad form, a bit cross and grumpy we say 'she is like a briar' as in thorny and unapproachable.

Would always have negative connotations for me.

I like it. Do not give Rose as a middle name, though, far too twee. Briar could be a kick ass lawyer, or a fluffy bunnikins. Versatile.
