Cerys or Carys?? name dilemma continues..

Hi. I have a dd who is nearly 4 weeks old. When she as born, my husband named her Cerys Louise when the midwife asked. I love the name Cerys, but cannot seem to settle. I am worried about it being shortened to Ceri or Ces (no offence meant, just not what I thought my daughter would be called). Everyone says it is a lovely girlie name, and she will love it when shes older, i am just worried about her being ceri. I really like Carys, but our best friends have a daughter called Carys, and I don'tknow if it would be right to call our dd Carys. My husband pefers Cerys as he thins it sounds softer and more girlie and also that she will love it when she older, and i am just n a dilemma about it all. We are not Welsh, so my dd will go to school in England I don;t want her to hate her name. Help?? our other dd is called Ciara and I love her name. I don;t think it helps that we though Cerys was a boy all the way through, just a feeling we had. Any advice on what I should do?? will i love the name, andits just because she is so new??? but 4 weeks on should I be questioning it???? opinions welcome. thanks in advance. xx

I think Cerys is lovely, we live in Wales and don't know of any being shortened in the ways that you mention, however I do know a Carys that gets called Caz.
That said Carys would be my personal preference because in a Welsh accent Cerys sounds harsher than Carys, kind of opposite to your Dh's opinions, but seeing as you don't live in Wales you won't have that problem
so stick with Cerys and congratulations on picking a lovely Welsh name and on you're new DD

Love Cerys. I wanted to call my dd this but dh vetoed it. I can't see why it would get shortened, or why Carys would be any less likely to get shortened. I think you should stick with Cerys.

I love Cerys - it won't get shortened unless your daiughter decides to when she's older so I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's a lovely pretty name!

Both are lovely names.

Personally I would pick Carys (one of my favourites, definitely thinking of using it) BUT since you've already named your DD Cerys I would stick with that. Don't worry about shortening - Cerys is not longer than Ceri so I don't think anyone will insist on shortening it down, and if they do you can always correct them and say you use the full name!

I have a 5yo Cerys! I've never shortened it and never heard anyone else shortening it either. In fact we generally add to it - her middle names is Mali and we call her Cerys Mali Monkey!

I've never heard Carys being shortened either though.

I love both names but a friend had a daughter she called Carys just before I had mine so it didn't feel right to give my DD the same name.

It's a lovely name, and I don't see it being shortened. Carys might turn into Carrie, which is quite close to Ciara in sound (assuming you pronounce it Keera).

I much prefer Cerys to Carys. Couldn't say why, it's just much prettier.

Is it because your husband named her? You say that he named her when the midwife asked. Did he just steamroller you or was this the name you'd agreed on? Bit naughty of him if it wasn't agreed, maybe that's why you can't settle with the name?

Personally (fwiw) I love Carice which was the name of Sir Edward Elgar's daughter, I think it's a more anglicised version of Carys and I love it. Not that this helps you, I know, just by the by!

I'm called Cerys, i love it and it doesn't get shortened to anything, i just get lots of compliments. You'll get used to it as she grows into it and it'll suit her. Whenever i say Carys i feel like im saying Cerys wrong, but thats just cos its me!

I love Carys and if there was even the remotest most distant shred of Welsh in our family it would be DC3s name. Cerys is also lovely, but quite similar to Ciara?

Lovely names, I love them both.

Dd was supposed to be Carys but her dad put his foot down (I'm half welsh but he is half scottish) so we agreed on Carrie and her middle name is also Louise so she is a CarrieLou!

Is Cerys pronounced with a 's' sound at the start or with a 'k' sound like Carrie? Sorry for being ignorant

LaRagazzaInglese · 01/03/2010 00:12

it's pronounced Kerris (rhymes with terrace)

It sounds way too similar to Ciara, whichever way you spell it. I'd go with something completely different.
Lovely name, though.
I know two girls named Cerys, both very cute.

I do agree with Vess- it does sound very very similar to Ciara. But perhaps that's the effect you were going after? In which case I prefer Cerys to Carys.

I love the name Caitlin! and would def be on my girls name list

Much better than Carys or Cerys ( although I prefer Carys out of the 2)

Can be shortened to Cait / Caitie but the full name is so pretty too

LOVE it !

I definitely prefer Caitlin Louise. As Rachie says, I think it's much better than Cerys and also it goes well with Ciara.

I prefer Cerys to Carys and prefer Cerys to Caitlin. Caitlin much more trendy and may outdate. As I mentioned on your other thread, DD's friend is Caitlin and gets 'Cake' by school mates. I wouldn't worry if you change it though as it is so early in her life. BUT would only change if you and DH are 100% and it doesn't really sound like you are.

I do quite like the names Cerys and Carys but I think they are both much too similar to Chiara!

I am not keen on Caitlin personally. I find it a bit trendy and it has been a little spoilt by all the kre8tive spellings! It is also similar to Chaira.

If I were you, I would take a little time to rethink and make sure that you choose a name that you are both totally happy with. There isn't a huge hurry if she is only 4 weeks!
Do you want more ideas or are you decided?

I think Chiara is beautiful by the way!
