We're having a girl and having loved Evie for years, have been put off by its popularity recently.

Niamh is the second choice but has the difficulty with the weird spelling- could be changed to NEVE possibly?

Do we follow our hearts and forget popularity with EVIE or go for something more unsual which is pretty NIAMH but slightly odd in terms of spelling??

Any advice appreciated!!

I love Niamh but the only thing that puts me off is that in my mind it's an Irish name, and I'm not Irish. No reason why you can't use it though!

I like Eve rather than Evie, you could always use Evie as a nn? Evie is popular but still a nice name.

What about Nieve... like snow! but pronouce it neev

that makes as much sense as neve. i know a girl who called her dd neve and I hate that spelling.

I like either Niamh, Eve, or Nieve.

I like Evie too but it'll be the new Claire.

SkyOneDay, Niamh has been in the top 100 girls names for a few years now. I think that that gives 'anybody' carte blanche to use it without necessarily being asked if they're Irish!!

Maggie, as I said, if the OP likes it they should go for it! I only stated the reason why I wouldn't use it, doesn't mean the OP can't.

We had the same problem, loved Evie but then loads of people we knew also used the name. How about Evangeline but known as Evie?

Evie is a beautiful name.....but there are so many of them in every nursery and primary school. No bad thing for a popular name but please consider:
Are you happy for your unique beautiful child to share her name with several others in her class/school?
She (believe me) will be known as Evie A/B/C etc. If that doesn't concern you then, yes go for it.
Niamh is lovely too. Just be aware she will have to spell it forever Good Luck

Your child will be unique and beautiful however many people she shares her name with! Eve is a wonderful name, and Evie is a wonderful shortening. For what it's worth, there is one Evie in ds's 420 strong primary school - and she is in Year 6 - none at all in the lower school.

You should follow your heart and if your heart says Evie then that's what you should pick. Otherwise you will probably regret it. We picked a compromise name to please the critics and then changed it to the name we had loved all along when ds was 3 months. Evie is lovely and I only know one.

I know quite a few Evie's and Eva's, it's popular but not horrendously so.

I think most people get Niamh now, I do know a Neve and a Niav though as well, prefer Niamh

I teach a Niamh (who was very impressed I knew how to say her name without asking) and a Neve. Both are 12. I much prefer it to Evie- and it works much better in adulthood IMO

Thanks ladies

lots of food for thought- I have Irish blood so the niamh thing kinda comes from there too but having spent some time living in spain the nieve spin makes it interesting too!! ohh what a responsibility with the decision- much easier to have loved an usual easily spelt name!! Boys names seem to be so much easier

How about Evieanna?

If I were calling a DD Niamh I would use the Irish spelling since it's an Irish name. I don't think it will be as difficult for people to spell or pronounce in years to come, as it really is getting very popular. Have you considered Ava, or Neva (the Russian river)? What about Aoife? Agree Nieve (snow) is a very nice alternative

dds middle name is nieve - it snowed on the day she was born

I also think Niamh is lovely.

Niamh is gorgeous but Neve is hideous.
Evie is nice too.
We considered Niamh for one of ours but ended up with Naomi.

Americans will assume it's pronounced 'Nev', as in Neve Campbell.

This will not be a problem if you do not know any Americans and are not planning to visit America at any point.

Niamh is a very popular name at the moment, so that spelling shouldn't be too tricky.
