so, friend is due at end of May. currently discussing names. She doesn't know the sex.

Alizarin/Alazarin for a boy? is apparently the name of a gorgeous blue colour.

In my watercolour box it says Alizarin Crimson, which is a lovely transparent red.
We also have Caeruleum Blue, which I would call Turquoise.
Most of the other colours don't sound that nice, for example Burnt Umber, Sap Green, Yellow Ochre.

yes choccy, it is used in red dye, but in blue paint as well. ooh er. which one sky??

Alizarin is usually associated with red dyes - it is a red chemical compound from the root of the madder plant. Can also be used in making blues. The word derives from the Arabic for juice.

I love the sound of it but would never be brave enough to use it. And yes, there's a character in Jilly Coopers 'Pandora' called Alizarin.

Sounds like an antihistamine to me - not entirely sure why?!

How about "Aladar" - lovely not made up Hungarian boy's name. I know one; he is known as Ali.

Haha I immediately thought of Jilly Cooper too... Alizarin with his sister Sienna and brother Viridian! I'd steer clear myself but whatever floats your boat.
