Quote of the week

CaptainNancy's (admirably succinct) family rules: "Don't be a dingbat/duffer. Keep calm and carry on. Dream big. Shut up and get on with it."

Carmenere's cinder toffee: sweet, sticky, made-in-five-minutes toffee squares that'll spark off a few 'yums' among the 'oohs' and 'aahs' of your little fireworks-watchers.

Otto?
*Cassius, not Cassiis. Although............... grin
Alex James, formerly of Blur and now organic, lentil-knitting cheesemaker extrordinaire, has a son called Geronimo. Am roffling at some of the made-upies- Ashtre is amahzing. smile

FWIW, OP, I really dislike Brakkai and Indio. Brakkai in particular gives me the heebies, but I don't know why. I do, however, love Cassiis and Inigo. Not that it matters a jot.

what about stig

also FairLadyRantALot, my dd goes to diving club with a 10 year old Sven
Lingle- because of course that happens to him every single day- people mistake him for a Roman senator all the timehmm Actually it is rather refreshing when people know about Gaius Cassius rather than asking about Mohammed Ali.

just call him whatever you want and what you like because although not everybody will like them my friend has just had a little girl and called her emma and i think that is revolting so not everyone can agree i think some people on here express themselves a little too strongly and can be quite upsetting so call him whatever you like he is your son xxxx
Shitting crikey NO!!!, those names awful, are you being ironic?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Wed 08-Jul-09 13:55:32
Is this a joke?

Your child will be unique there is no need to give them quite such a daft name!

Oh Fimbo, that's gorgeous - I love bisexual names.
I am going to call my hypothetical third child Waitrose.

And what's not to like about continually being asked "didn't you stab Caesar? or where you the one on his side?"
Cassius isn't unusual or original, it's a good strong Roman name , there are a fair few about [my ds s the most lovely though]

and my husband is 43. his middle name is caleb. someone, somewhere will have the name you pick....so why worry? id love to understand the new competitive baby naming thing...
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Wed 08-Jul-09 00:02:14
dare i ask....

ok i dare. WHY do you need a totally unique/made up name anyway? its like baby naming has become super competitive! just choose a bloody name you like! who cares if anyone else has it! someone somewhere probably will and why does that matter?

mum to a very confused normal named couple of children who are not so far traumatised by having said names.
I quite like Indio, not so keen on Brakkai.

lingle hallelujah! As beautiful and popular as the name Grace might currently be - I fear my offspring will grow up to be a Ginger Tree-climbing Bruiser [tm], she will be named Bensons - far more in fitting with her personality.

Ebonaaaaay, ebonaaaaay - look at moi ebonaaaay!

Look OP,

If you are beautiful and confident, it's great to be called Orlando or whatever.

If you are shy or not beautiful, it's hell on earth.

How's your bone structure?

"But I do find all the 'ho, ho, let's add some words that would be ridiculous names' games a bit <yawn>."

Don't play then. It gives some people some mild amusement - obviously it doesn't amuse you. Find another game to play!
Oh I can easily take the ribbing about my children's unusual names. And I'm sure they will be resilient enough to cope too (in a multicultural classroom where no-one else really gives a shit anyway).

But I do find all the 'ho, ho, let's add some words that would be ridiculous names' games a bit <yawn>. We get it, any name that is mispelt/modern/ hippy/chavvy/pretentious /unknown to you makes you spill your cocoa. Why do you care so much?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 06-Jul-09 09:00:33
I went to school with a Geronimo. He was gorgeous. As such nobody took the piss out of his name, as they all wanted to snog him be his friend.

He was called Gerry for short.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Mon 06-Jul-09 08:35:21
But so what if they're rubbished? As seeker so rightly points out - if a bunch of "old enough to know better" women are taking the piss - heaven help little Tankard when he hits 13 and rolls up at the local comp!

If you don't want people to rip the piss out of what you know are dodgy names, and hence you parade them here for approval - - don't fecking post them!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 05-Jul-09 22:17:25
yes they did seeker. twice.
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 05-Jul-09 22:13:24
Both are really awful! shock
But I don't think anyone rubbished any real names did they? Honestly, is there anyone called Tankard?
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Sun 05-Jul-09 21:57:54
oh come on this is pathetic. and of course it is really nasty if you see a bunch of people (who you might even respect or like a bit) rubbishing your child's name.
"The problem is lockets- it just gets nasty, doesn't it"

I really don't think it's nasty - there isn't, surely, a mumsnetter with children called Scrofulo, Palimpsest and Lexicon?

And if anyone is thinking of using those names, the gentle teasing they got on here would be nothing compared to what they would get in real life - so this thread could serve useful warning function!
maybe start a new thread with some criteria sumatra?
helps if people know what your other dc are called too, to judge your taste...

not my cuppa tea but each to their own,my first post as i am new to all of this!
I am also stuggling for a boys name! help!
The problem is lockets- it just gets nasty, doesn't it...
same poster who does it about your DS' name got her comeuppance on a baby names thread where she was slagging off another name, and someone ended up outing her and her children's names, didn't they?
A couple of silly posts are great- a joke, a good laugh, but this has gone a little too far really.
I obviously have my grumpy pants on today, as none of my childrens' rather numerous names have been mentioned smile
Geronimo is a good name.
I think an awful lot of he time posters are aware of mners with children who have certain names and choose to slag them off anyway-kind of like sport- there is one poster who has done it about my ds's name more than once- spelt it wrong once though which kind of stole her thunder grin

I actually knew a male Lexie when I was a teenager.
Django Reinhardt is not just 'some guitarist' ... he is one of the greatest ever guitarists.

I do think some people have taken it a little too far on this thread though, tbh.

BALD- you usually pull people up when they're being unkind, not join in.

And as I said- there IS a mner with a son named Geronimo sad

outnumbered...we worked on the phonetic rule...especially as I am german, and becase our boys names are phonetic names they tend to work in both languages, and are pronounced the same, whihc we found important...
however, Sven does sometimes get called Seven hmm or Swen (so, like Swan but with an e instead of an a hmm), Yannic seems to be unproblematic enough and Flynn, too
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 03-Jul-09 13:46:23
Great site Surfermum. I used this for both my sons names. Worth considering names that are phonetic and people will not pronounce incorrectly on a daily basis for the rest of their lives! hmm
or wigston

hehe, we hvae been pondering, if for whatever weird and wonderful reason we had called any of our sons Corby or even Corben (a name I actually did like) how weird that would have been....as we now live in Corby...grin

And regarding difficult-to-pronounce or spell names, you may not realise it but the sub-text here is that only English names are acceptable.

Lots of the names people complain are hard to pronounce or spell on these boards are Celtic. If they're not used they'll die out completely which is death of culture in action, and would be a great shame.
EPPM, I love Thurston. We considered it for DS (Sonic Youth fans grin)

"i do think it terribly selfish to want to name a child something SOOO unusual.

he will forever be repeating his name, having to spell it out and never fitting in.

unusual or rather uncommon name fine, totally unique? its just not fair."

Sorry but that's just not true.

I know lots of adults with unusual names - work colleagues have commented "do you actually now anyone with a normal name?!"

They ALL say they really like their unusual names.

It's much more common to have an unusual name these days anyway. Look at any inner-city primary school class register and you'll see traditional names are often in the minority!
How about
Jago
Rollo
Ezra
Cyrus
Cassius
whilst i can understand the desire to not have one of 14 tom's in a year group, i do think it terribly selfish to want to name a child something SOOO unusual.

I really don't like Brakkai, sorry, seems very harsh, and made up. Indio- the only one I can think of was the nasty bandito in a spaghetti western....

Olo - I don't like that, what about Iolo (it's a Welsh name).

Don't like Indio either - what about Inigo, it's a lovely name IMO - it's Spanish or Basque I think.

Brakkai - nope.

Thing is I really don't like randomly made up names really, like proper names.
I know what you mean about wanting something different, but the names you've suggested are just that bit too unusual. Your other childrens names are beautiful, and unusual enough to be different in your area, but not too unusual to cause a stir. Some of the others that have been suggested are worth considering
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 03-Jul-09 10:35:39

corey is not american its celtic although it is widely used now in the u.s. however 14 years ago wasn't quite so popular. my childrens other names are very unusual to the area i live in. this is what i am trying to obtain really. i always imagine what it would be like to name my child something quite whacky during pregnancy, must be hormones? but as soon as they arrive as you can see it never happens. in reality i know that i'd never really use them i just thought it would be fun to see strangers reponses, although it's mostly been far from fun!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Fri 03-Jul-09 09:06:05
How about Oak or Lex?
And your other kids names aren't unusual at all - pretty normal middle class names IMO. Well except Corey which is American isn't it so there will be about another billion of them on the planet!
Or Sea Lion!

Why would you want to saddle your kid with a name everyone will ask hin to repeat or spell?

Why does it have to be unusual or not used - everyone's name is used by someone else no matter how stupid it is and that is my take on what you are trying to do STUPID!

My friend has a Harlan - she also has a Torin, it's an Irish name and I have never met another one...
Moiye? I think it's a Native American Indian name for a river somewhere- would shorten to 'mo' nicely.

Ceawlin is pronounced see-lin, I think! The lady at Longleat told me at the weekend but...It is the name of the Marquess of Bath's 34 yr old son.
thanks TM.
That sounds lovely. smile

I think Indio is OK, quite nice actually. Can imagine quite a cool kid. But isn't it Robert Downey Jnr's son's name?
Brakkai is yuk though, sorry.

WTF? You reside on earth yet you are considering dreadful made up names for your child?

funnily enough baskingseals arlo was on my list as it is a combo of my two younger sons names and river inigo and asa are all on the maybe list. I was just trying out the most unusual names first but maybe they are just too wacky to sit alongside my other childrens names?

zeke how would you pronounce Ceawlin
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 22:16:38
Harlok, I would really try not to take offence to the comments on here! I posted my DS's name when we were deciding and about 98% of responses said we would be cruel to name a child that, or similar! We didnt let it put us off, after all this is a load of opinions from stranger's, but it did give us a good heads up for any negative recations we might receive once he was born!

FWIW your name choices are a maybe a bit wacky, but I know nothing about you or your family and without that reference it's often difficult to see the names in their proper context, iykwim. Good luck with whatever you choose!

lovely suggestion sleepyeyes it's grabbing me already. just one prob hubby not to keen(grin)
hmm I'd take Kevin or Brian over anything you've come up with so far. There's unique and then there's downright silly.

sorry typo error at least just the once
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 21:40:29
they don't have to be entirely made up however if it sounds nice then i don't mind although all names have to originate from somewhere.
i just prefer to have a name that is unique at least to the area i live in at least.
any suggestions?

i originally liked the name bracken however i discovered that there was another boy in my childs school with the same name so i thought brakkai would be an unusual alternative. maybe not!
Add message | Report | Contact poster By Thu 02-Jul-09 21:31:55
when you say unique do you mean entirely made up?
I'm not being rude just curious?
FWIW I don't like either any of your two three suggestions so far
Sorry but they are awful.

I am struggling to find a boys name that is the "one". I like unique names but also names that will grow with them, quite a difficult combo. I like the sound of Brakkai and Indio but would like to test them out before I actually name the baby. Any comments welcome.
