First impressions are that of a middle aged man! But thinking about it more, if I met a toddler / child called bernard I would think he was the cutest, coolest little poppet ever . It would be a weird name for a baby, but both my dc's had names that didn't suit babies, I figured they're only tiny for a short time then they grow into a name.

You have to use it. Its quite cuddly.

no, no, no, no and no.

that's a no. It just doesn't compute.

Bernie Winters?

Purlease.

I know two Bernards. One is deceased. A long time ago. One is someone my mum knows who is (allegedly) a bit dodgy.

Sounds very dog like. Sorry!

If I met a Bernard toddler I'd think "poor thing, how could the parents do that?".
You did ask...!

It's a manly name but...

St Bernard dogs probably make it seem a cuddly name

Bernard Manning was cuddly (other adjectives abound)

Bernard Matthews

sorry, hope this isn't putting you off.....

I was going to say Not now Bernard!

It's quite 70s. Maybe due a comeback?

Report
missmiss · 14/05/2009 00:12

By 70s, I mean that the hairy man in The Joy of Sex looks like a Bernard.

Report
FrankMustard · 14/05/2009 00:16

Ooh, I love Bernard Cribbins! He can't possibly be put in the same pile as Manning!

Report
stillenacht · 14/05/2009 00:18

it is 70s missmiss and thats where it should stay i reckon..but actually was anyone named Bernard in the 70s or is it just a middle aged mans name in the 70s...so really its very 30s....

Wasn't the guy on children's tv who pretended to ride a big bird puppet thing called Bernard or Bernie?

(Sorry OP, we're really not backing you on your name choice, are we!)

Actually, Bernard Sumner is cool too...with him and Bernard Cribbins, I'm coming round to the idea of naming a child Bernard!!!

Report
EyeballsisonaDietAgain · 14/05/2009 00:27

Nursey.

-Nursey's not my real name?

  • What is your real name?
  • Haha...Bernard!
  • Suits you actually

Sorry

Hi, my DS was so very nearly a Bernard, DH and I have such different tastes this was nearly our compromise choice. Even announced it to family and had a surprisingly good reaction (from the older generation, silence from the others) Thankfully (!) we changed our mind and went for Barnaby. Must say I am hugely relieved we didn't saddle DS with Bernard, think people may have sniggered.

dizzydixies · 14/05/2009 15:55

ok so I see the Cedric/Bernard thing and although I wouldn't use them I can see the attraction somewhat

could you possibly consider my favourites though please?

Herbert nn Herb or Herbie
Hector
Arthur nn Art

I love those but having had 3 girls seems unlikely I'll have a little Herb
