boys names - do I need to worry about rhyming slang

We have few ideas for boys names for ds1 who is due any day now.

The options that are being considered are:

Jack Arthur
Joseph Arthur
Eric Arthur

Arthur is DPs great grandfather's name and his Granny would be really pleased.

DP doesn't really like Joseph and said that J Arthur was rhyming slang for wank so we shouldn't go with that name - shortly after he said it he realised that this logic would also rule out Jack which had been his first choice.

Is this rhyming slang really common knowledge and do you think this is enough to rule out Jack and Joseph?

Any other suggestions of names that would go well with a middle name Arthur

I think Arthur is cool as a first name.

I wouldn't worry about the slang thing. I don't think most kids even know each others middle name and it's a bit of an obscure rhyme.

I had heard of it when it when you drew attention to it but how often do you have a first intitial and the full middle name written down anywhere? How many people are really going to notice?

He is more likely to be Jack A or Joseph A

Either of which are nice names.

Not sure about younger teenagers but J Arthur Rank is pretty well known rhyming slang.

I'd be more worried about names like John Thomas or Richard Short. THEN you would be asking for trouble...

my mum nearly called my brother Jonathan Thomas as John Thomas is quite a common name on her side of the family - she was blissfully unaware of the connotations! He had a lucky escape!

The surname is one that having A as a first initial is not great which is why we had thought of Arthur as a middle name - having said that this would be better than the rhyming slang thing

Another middle name is an option - will suggest this to DP so he can start thinking

This probably won't help but my first reaction on seeing Jack A written down was "Jackass"!

My ex's surname was 'Hole' His middle name was Adrian. His name, written down in full was quite embarrassing!

If your surname is the same one as my friends who couldn't use an "A" name, be careful not to do what they did and use a P instead!

Could you not have Joseph/Jack Something Arthr Surname?

Then you could have both the names you like without the two being next to each other...

Could you call him Arthur Jack (or Joseph) to be known as Jack (or Joseph)? I know a few people who have always been called by their second name.
