Really love the name Malia.

I think we are more or less set on it. Women in my family for generations carried name Maria and Malia is just a little twist on that just as our daughter will be- mixture of cultures.

What would be the nicknames for Malia? Can we call her Maya or Lia?

Would like suggestions for middle name. Looking for something more international as none of our families are english speakers. Our last name is ending with a.

So far we love Malia Eva, pronounced ava

Again this is fitting as my husband closest sister is Awa, so same name with little twist.

I love flower and nature names but my husband has old fashioned belief on naming after other people in the family.

Other combos I am thinking of

Malia Lily- might be mouthfull
Malia Iris

It is a pretty name, but the first thing I think of when I hear the word Malia is the holiday resort in Greece visited by teenagers and featured on the TV programme 'Sun, sex and suspicious parents'...

I am sure this is not what you want to hear, but it is better that you do know. Sorry.

I agree I'm afraid; Malia = dodgy Greek resort.

Also reminds me of the alcohol filled holiday resort which is a shame as it's a really pretty name.

Where do you live OP?

I actually prefer Malia lily to Malia Eva, I think the vowels at the end of the first name and beginning of the second name make malia Eva difficult to say.

I have never heard of resort of any TV shows, generally dont watch TV at all.

I am little worrying about the Obama thing as we are also mixed race but was hoping this was not widely known in UK as it was known everywhere when we were living in US and hopefully will be forgoten in couple of years.

There are other spelling like Maliah. There is Maleah but this look tooo African American to me and we are not. My friends just had daughter and named her Maleaha but no clue how to even pronounce it.

Dodgy resort.
Sounds like an illness of some sort.
Sorry. Thumbs down from me.

OP it's a holiday resort in Greece, quite famous in the UK for being the favoured destination of young, drunk, vomiting holiday makers.

Malia Eva Obama (for pondering purposes) makes a lot of a endings

How about Malia Eve? Still works as Ava is the repetition of the same vowel same for Eve

Sorry but I just think of the very down market Crete resort!

Full of pissed up Brits - vomming pissing and shagging in the streets!

Google Malia Crete and click on images to give you an idea of how down market it is,if you have no idea.

I dont mean to be cruel but you need to know before making a final decision.

you'll get a lot of 'is that where she was conceived?'

the place is well-known to anyone vaguely familiar with Greece.

is your surname really Obama? The first black president won't be forgotten in a century.

A bunch of our sixth formers went to Malia for their summer hols. They spent ages doing the 'no carbs before marbs' diet. The name is OK but that is what I would think of. Sorry.

Sorry but immediately makes me think of naked girls giving strangers blow jobs on bars and beaches riddled with condoms.

If I heard that as a child's name I'd assume your daughter was conceived via a one night stand on your first girls trip abroad. Sorry.

Also confused as to the Eva Ava thing. If you want it pronounced Ava then spell it Ava instead of as a completely different name Confused
