Need a middle name for a girl!

We're pretty much settled on Celyn for this baby if she's a girl (it's Welsh for 'holly', pronounced 'kellin' and no I'm not interested in whether you'd think it's pronounced 'ceiling' or not, we live in Wales Grin )

We need a middle name... our only criteria at the minute is 'something that goes with Celyn'. Doesn't have to be Welsh but if you want to suggest some Welsh ones that's cool. Just any girls' name that goes with Celyn as we're stuck Grin

I have absolutely no idea where this came from but as i saw you name - Celyn i immediately said Velora which is a name I don't ever recall seeing ever in my life!! I googled it and lo and behold it is actually a girls name it means strong or healthy!! Good luck with your name search anyway Grin

Do you like Cylin Elizabeth? I like a longer middle with a shorter first name. Cylin Rose is beautiful!!

Apologies for incorrect spelling. I tried to remember whilst I typed (on phone) but have scrambled egg for brains!!

I like longer middle names too but OH wants a shorter one, so we need to compromise. I'm not overly keen on Elizabeth, it's OH's mum's middle name and we get on ok but I don't want to use it as potential DD's middle name if that makes sense Grin

I always like the idea of honouring a relative or ancestor in the middle name - no names that appeal from favourite aunties or grans or lost-through-marriage surnames in the family tree?

thinking back through family now Grin

Rita
Nancy
Megan (a big no-no as SIL wants this for if she has children)
Florence
Fanny (possibly best avoided)
Martha
Iris

Just not keen on any of them. They seem a bit... "old" for my liking.

We don't have this issue with boys' name. Two middle names, one in memory of my brother and the other for OH's granddad. So why is a girl's middle name so much more difficult!! Grin

Of course Rose was the first name suggested!

I'd go for Celyn Octavia!

It seems a bit... grandiose for us Grin plus OH hates Skoda Octavias and that's all he'd think about Hmm Grin

My only worry with ones like Rose, Lily etc is that they're flower names... and so is Celyn in Welsh. Too flowery?

You're not limited to first names for a middle name though - we used my mum's maiden name for one of ours (it is a very nice surname which can be used as a first name, though.)

I actually really like Celyn Iris, so my tastes are maybe too different from yours to offer any useful comments...

Celyn is lovely :)

Rose is so very popular as a middle name (along with Grace and May) that personally I'd want to avoid it, but no idea if if that matters to you?

How about using variations of your family names, so still technically named after then even though it sounds like a different name?

Celyn Enfys
Celyn Annis
Celyn Anna
Celyn Hannah
Celyn Stephanie
Celyn Frances
Celyn Ramona
Celyn Margaret

  • Iris means rainbow in Old Greek according to this site, as does Enfys in Welsh as I expect you know
  • Both Rita and Megan are diminutives of Margaret
  • Nancy is a diminutive of Annis, Anna and Hannah - see this page
  • Fanny is a pet name for Stephanie and Frances (and Euphemia too!)
  • Ramona - no reason particularly, I just like it

I wanted Celyn Rose but DP didn't fancy the Rose part as it is a bit popular even though it is a family name.

Our Celyn is Celyn Esther.

I love the name, never heard of it before my BFP but had a Christmas EDD so wanted the Christmas name, DP wanted a welsh name.

She ended up being 2 months early but we kept the christmas name.
