Bess was an old nickname for Elizabeth - so I wouldn't worry about Eliza not sounding exactly like it to be honest

That said, Betty is a commonly known shortened form of Elizabeth and it's got nothing to do with the name

If you like Eliza, then why not just call her Eliza ? (see thread from a couple of days ago where parent was cross the new school had written her child's full name on everything when she maintained the child didn't know her own name as she used a derivative)
