How would you pronounce Eliza? Like Elizabeth (ee) or like Liza (eye) Minelli?

Oh isn't that the same?

Haven't you seen My Fair Lady OP? The way they pronounce it in that.

I think of using it as a nn for Elizabeth. So would it not be pronounced exactly the same way as the first part of the name?

I'd say El-eeza but can also imagine El-yza.

Do you think it's a legitimate nickname for Elizabeth then? It sounds nothing like Elizabeth :(

Betty doesn't sound much like Elizabeth either. I'd definitely say Eh lye zuh

Eh Lye Zuh

eh lye zuh. Are you going to use it? its a fab name and in my top 3 with Hester nn Hetty and Martha. Sadly I will be having no girls! And yes a very good nn for Elizabeth.

DS2 is Raphael nn Rafe. Raphael sounds nothing like Rafe I just wanted to give him a 'proper' name as well as a nn

Ee-lye-za like Eliza Dolittle.

Bess was an old nickname for Elizabeth - so I wouldn't worry about Eliza not sounding exactly like it to be honest Grin

I think it's a lovely name in it's own right. Much nicer than Elizabeth.

I prefer it on its own rather than for a nickname for elizabeth.

Would pronounce it eh lye za. Like liza minelli with an E.

It's a horrid name! Elisabeth is much prettier in it's full state.

Fwiw I'd pronounce it ee lie sa.

Eh lye za, like Eliza Doolitle!

Never heard it pronounce Ee lye za or Eh lee za.

If you want it to be pronounced like Elizabeth, then it's spelt Elisa.

Ee - lie - zer.
Not sounding like 'Liz' part of Elisabeth.

What about Liz, or lizzie or Beth ?

That said, Betty is a commonly known shortened form of Elizabeth and it's got nothing to do with the name Grin

If you like Eliza, then why not just call her Eliza ? (see thread from a couple of days ago where parent was cross the new school had written her child's full name on everything when she maintained the child didn't know her own name as she used a derivative)
