first name surname help needed!

Hi all. So we have a little yellow bundle arriving any day now, and I keep coming back to the beautiful welsh name Emrys for a boy. My DH is Welsh first language but as we live in England a lot of the welsh names are hard to get your tongue around. We both adore the name. Only thing is our surname is Lewis. I think it's ok, and dh sees no problem, but do you think Emrys Lewis is too "rhymey"? I just have it in the back of my mind!

I think it's a lovely name but I'm afraid I probably wouldn't use it myself as I don't feel like it flows well with Lewis, it's too similar with both being 2 syllables and ending with "is".

However, I'm particularly fussy about the way names flow, and I know plenty of people with names that I don't think really work, so if you really love it then use it! Once it's his name people will just accept it and not give the matchiness another thought.

Is it pronounced Em-riss or Em-reece? If the latter I think it's fine with Lewis. Maybe a bit matchy if the former but I think it's a really lovely name anyhow.

Thanks - glad you like the name. It's pronounced em-riss so same last syllable. I'm having such a dilemma!!! I know it is matchy which would usually put me off but I just love the name and dh is totally sold on it!!!

The other name we love is Osian, pronounced Osh-an. But I worry that he'll be permanently correcting people as it's less phonetic in English. But I know plenty of people who have to do that first time they meet, even a Siobhan! This naming business is hard!!!!!

Love both names but I think Osian goes better with Lewis.

Could you double barrel his surname if you are really stuck on Emrys?

There are plenty of Emrys Lewis' in Wales!! I can think of two where I live. Think its a perfectly nice, acceptable name and given your Welsh connection you are more than justified in using it! Go for it!

know people who have used Welsh names without any Welsh connection - in fact someone recently used my one of my favourite Welsh girl's names. It is nice to have a story behind it though I guess.

i also guessed the pronunciation correctly too, so shouldn't have too many problems there.

Love it, but not with Lewis. What about Geraint Lewis? Weksh names often look ugly written down but sound beautiful.

I think they go together beautifully well, I'd use it and keep Osian for a possible brother!

Osian is such a lovely name. Emrys is too, but me as well, I'm very fussy when it comes to the flow. I'm having such a hard time with names for my twin boys so I feel your pain.

I wouldn't worry too much about having to correct people, not knowing how to pronounce it. My niece is called Aoife (ee-fa) and is forever correcting people, but loves having a unique name. I think it's lovely.

I might choose Osian given your surname - I really don't think it is a hard one for English people to pronounce.

Otherwise would Emyr be an alternative to Emrys?
