SIL has just told us her friend's childrens' names which are a bit odd taken together and I'm worried maybe ours are too. Don't want to tell family because of the opinions but after a check, please. DD is Polly, and DC2 will be George if a boy and Mabel if a girl. Middle initials P.B., surname begins with D. Anything odd / funny there?

I think Mabel is really quite a different type of name from Polly. Not sure that matters though.

I think Polly and Mabel sound great together. I'm not a massive Mabel fan. I know a teenage Mabel who now goes by Vanessa or Nessa - she didn't like her name.

Thanks. Hmm. Any other suggestions? Quite like old fashionedy, but not too girly.

I prefer Martha to Mabel, I'm not a fan of Mabel or Ethel at all, sorry. I also love Elsie at the mo too xx

We know someone who's just had a Martha, so that's out really. Would be odd. And I think DH doesn't like it. We has Vivien, which I loved, but I posted on here about the initials, V.D. and got a fairly horrified response Grin. I feel like with Mabel she could change it a bit, call herself May or something. No? Oh dear. I don't want to saddle the child with a horrible name!

I love Polly, not so keen on Mabel.

I really like Mabel if that evens it out.

Polly and Dolly would be a bit odd, but can't see anything strange in the names you've chosen.

Alternatives to Mabel could be Meryl (Merril) or Marianne

I like Mabel and it goes fine with Polly.

Love George, perfect all through life.

I like mabel! Like you say she could be may if she wanted. What about iris, Marsha, ivy, Elsa, Maggie, olive, nell, Ruthie?

What about Sarah? I think it goes well with Polly.....

Or Marni?

I like Mabel,

What about Lydia if you like old fashioned?

Report
HoneyandRum · 28/01/2013 08:20

Yep love Lydia

HoneyandRum · 28/01/2013 08:21

Although Lydia sounds like a sexy siren compared to Polly so maybe not the best match

What about something like Tess or Anna?

Phoebe sounds great with Polly (Pol and Feebs!)

This is all sounding very Jane Austen, I like it. Such a shame I'm having a boy.

Polly and Tess would be lovely. I like that a lot.

Mirabelle is great

Thank you all. I think we've been through most of the suggestions and either they're names of close family or friends, or DH has vetoed them! Polly and Tess sounds a bit like Porgy and Bess to me, and Polly and Ivy (which we considered) like Holly and Ivy. It's a bleedin minefield!

I think that would go well.
Or Ellen.

Or Polly and Suzanne! Then you could have 'polly put the kettle on / Suki take it off again'...

OP, it sounds like you could be over thinking it a bit - not many people will say your girls' names together. Obviously the names should sit well together, but most likely any names you like will be of a certain type.

Just find a name that you love, and I'm sure it will fit perfectly.
