I was thinking Malcolm for my son. He would be Malcolm Grant. Is this name posh, do you think? Smile

Wouldn't it cause confusion?

Mal Grant. It sounds like being refused a grant.

I think Grant is a great surname and suits alot of first names. I'm not keen on Malcolm.

It is neither posh nor not posh to my eyes and ears.

If you want posh then go for something like Ptolemy. Malcolm is a good name but not especially posh (I'd say it was respectable, definitely passes the lawyer test).

Just think it would be a bit odd having 2 Malcolm grants in the house.

I was going to say Ptolemy! Also Rupert springs to mind.

I think Malcolm is fine. Or how about
Theodore Grant
Caspar Grant
Magnus Grant
Sebastian Grant
Miles Grant

I'm not keen on the Pt part of Ptolemy. There are far nicer posh names imo.

Isn't Rupert Grant Ron Weasley? Xmas Grin

And I wouldn't say Malcolm was posh. My uncle is Malcolm and he's definitely not posh.

Hugo (maybe not with Grant as a surname actually Xmas Smile)
Jolyon
Stellan
Ivo
Cosmo
Magnus

Why are you obsessed with having a posh name Xmas Confused

Bit weird IMO and definitely not posh either

The only Malcolm I know is a nice, but rather dull chap.

I don't think it is a posh name.

The poshest person I was at university with was an OE called Humphrey. Awfully nice chap. Looked a bit like a young Nigel Havers. This was some time ago!!

"a lot of these are dogs names, apart from Malcolm "
Really? Most dogs round here are called Rufus, Fido, Rex and Oscar!

I think what people mean with 'posh' names are simply classic, elegant underused names, the opposite of 'chav' names.

I'm not keen on the Mal part of Malcolm, but I love Magnus, Maxim or Monty. Or how about Caspian, Fabian or Tristan?

OwlLady · 12/12/2012 12:13

see I know a dogs called Magnus and Monty as well! :o

I do live ina naice area though Wink my poor dog (who is spayed thank god) was rathe enthusiastically humped by a dalmation called Hugo Confused she was really not impressed

I wouldn't say Malcolm was posh. If you want a posh name, how about Ambrose? Or are you trying to avoid one?

Report
shoobidoo · 12/12/2012 13:40

What does 'posh' mean nowadays? If it means classic, elegant and underused then how about these:

Marcus
Sebastian
Tristan
Quentin
Reuben
Vincent
Clement

Nowadays there are so many different names around that the old stereotypes aren't really relevant imo.

Tarquin

I've never met a dog called Ptolemy.

I'm liking that Magnus is considered posh. Go to Orkney and you might change your mind once you've seen a few Mansies being thrown out of the pub.

Malcolm is a great and underused name and not posh

Really posh boys are always called something like Jumbo or Biff.

Report
Leafmould · 17/12/2012 20:30

There is a guy on my estate called jumbo. He is NOT posh.

I think it is hard to say wether a name is posh or not. I know a Malcolm who is nice but not posh.

maxmillie · 17/12/2012 20:33

Malcolm is a late middle-aged middle manager in an office name surely?
