Reuben - Do you think people will call my ds Ruby instead of his actual name?

The name we both love is Reuben but I'm worried that people will shorten it to Ruby Shock. Is this crazy pregnancy hormones? I'm talking about the majority of people and I don't think you can protect them from everything!

I have a friend called Rueben and he gets called rue. I think it's a lovely name :)

No. I think it's more likely to be rube, rubes, ru, ben, benny, stuff like that.

It's really not very common to cross gender in name shortening, if that makes any sense.

I can't see it being shortened and it's a lovely name.

Roo. Though I knew one called Rubes and he got 'Pubes' at school.....

I think it's unlikely in the UK. A family we know has a DS Reuben and they shorten it to Ruby, but they don't speak English so it has different connotations for them (ie not known either as a jewel or a female name).

My nephew is Reuben, only shortened to Ruby in the context of Rooby Dooby Doo to make him giggle! (he's 5)

I haven't heard any nicknames for Reuben.

A relief, thanks for the opinions!!

Going to stick with Reuben, now I just need a middle name!

I know a 4yo Ruben (not spelled Reuben but pronounced the same) and he is NNd Rube or Rubes. It doesn't seem right to NN a boy Ruby (unless you wanted to, of course).

Reuben is my 2nd favourite boys name: second only to Gabriel.

Good luck!

Ruby Walsh is a Reuben. I really like it as a nn, not keen on it as a girls name.

You can't control nickname once they're at school. Reuben may well get shortened to Roo, Rooby, Roobs, but I think all are cute nicknames personally.

DD1 has a mate called Reuben, and he's just.....Reuben. No-one shortens it.

YoullLaughAboutItOneDay · 06/10/2012 21:20

I know three, none have it shortened to Ruby. Some of the families say 'Roo', but not more widely.

I have an 8 year old Reuben and I call him Roo, Rooly or Roobarb but no one else shortens his name.

madStaringEyes your info is incorrect. Ruby Walsh is actually a Rupert.

I know a Reuben, he is Reuben or Benny! Go figure. :)
