Is it ok as a 'stand-alone' name or should it really be a shortened form of Nicolas or similar?

Lovely!

I'd probably use Nicholas on BC though (as it gives more options in later life).

I love Nico for the same reason as Kayano. I'm trying to persuade DP that we should use it.

Its the name I now wished I'd called dc3. Its a great name and easy for them to spell (unlike the name we gave him!).
Not a fan of Nicholas tho.

I like Nico as short for Nicolas - nicer than Nick or Nicky. I do prefer a BC name to give a child a more formal option later though.

Being someone who dislikes their full birth name, I was grateful that it has a number of diminutive forms, two of which I am happy to be referred to by.

By all means call him Nico, but it is always nice to have a choice to be a Nick/Nicky later in life, if he doesn't like Nico.

It sounds nicknamey.

We had a guinea pig that arrived as a Nico. We changed it.

Sil and Bils Dog is called Nico. It suits him.

Would be ok if you live in Italy..

Nico Sarko...

But he'll hopefully be ejected from the presidency by the time your little one is ready for school.

I like it as a stand-alone name for boy or girl.
