Your DC's names - how important were the meanings to you?

Several names have lovely meanings but others have rather, erm, interesting ones to put it nicely...

Did you choose the name(s) you did just because they sounded nice, or did the meaning factor in for you? If it did, how much of a weight factor was it?

I didn't really think about the meaning tbh.

Not important. Have no idea what they mean or interest in finding out.

We checked - our (as yet unborn) DS' names all have lovely meanings (as do mine and DH's). TBH I would be put off by a horrible meaning.

Oh, I would say my split is about 25/75 to meaning/how it sounds.

Meaning was a little bit important to me as I didn't want a name with a horrible meaning but it didn't have to mean something fantastic, if that makes sense? DD1's name means 'God is my satisfaction,' and as we aren't religious in the slightest, the meaning doesn't really have any significance for us, we just loved her name, but it's not a horrible meaning. If we'd had a boy I wouldn't have used the name Cameron - Cameron sounds OK, nice name but it means crooked nose and this puts me off!

The meaning of my own name is quite masculine, which would put me off for a girl. It is a unisex name but it is mainly used for girls.

I am slightly put off by the meanings of some biblical names or rather the implications of them...my best childhood friend is Rebecca, and when we looked up our name meanings, hers meant 'bound' - implying servitude, humility, subjection, etc, and I've always found that rather depressing.
(I just searched for the name meaning on Google now, though, and it came up with a whole bunch of other meanings so perhaps you just have to pick the meaning you like... :) )

The same goes with Martha, although I think it's a very pretty name, but the character in the Bible is the one who does all the hard work in the kitchen and somehow implies being downtrodden and miserable.

For no particular reason I also feel the same about Abigail, which my OH likes - to me it just sounds like the name of a downtrodden medieval servant girl. The name actually means 'father's joy', though, so my interpretation is entirely my own invention, I think!

I must add that I don't have any religious convictions, so really the 'biblical' meanings oughtn't carry any weight with me, but I was brought up CofE and OH is lapsed Catholic, so the implications of biblical names still hang heavy on us - my instinct is to avoid them altogether tbh.
