Is Skarloey a real name?

A friend is expecting her first DS and is talking about calling him Skarloey. The only Skarloey I've ever heard of is a friend of Thomas the Tank Engine. Don't want to judge other people's choices but can someone tell me whether it is considered a "real" name?

No, not a real name. In fact in the original Thomas the Tank stories, it is the (completely fictional) name of a station and railway line, not just an engine.

Are you sure your friend isn't joking or trying to avoid telling you her real name choice?

It's quite a nice-sounding word, I bet there are several children already sporting it

I teach an Anakin, it's no stranger than that imo

Tabitha It is quite possible that she is joking but she sounded fairly serious. I did wonder whether she thought it was a long version of Louis/Louey.

Oh her child will be so popular in reception class with all those little Thomas the Tank engine fans. If she has twin daughters later do suggest Annie and Clarabel. Or Mavis. I have a 2 yr old whose current behaviour could get him renamed Cranky.

I've never heard of it, but I have no idea how to pn it. Looks like Skarly or Skarla, which sound okay (for a girl). I suppose I could accept Skarly pn on a boy.

Not even going to lie, Scarloey is my name.
I'm literally named after a fictional train lmfao

(My mum changed it from Skarloey to Scarloey for me).

I think it means something in welsh - like tree by the lake - it says in the TtTE book.

Sounds like someone mashed Scarlett and Chloe/Zoe together.

I've only ever come across it in Thomas the Tank Engine.

It's not a decoy name is it?

To be fair, saidthespider, Annakin is a real surname, with Anakin the sci-fi variant given-name spelling.

It's not actual Welsh Livin. On account of a k.
