We are having a girl and the other kids have traditional names so want this one to have something similar.

We like

Charlotte
Alexandra
Isobel

But we cant come up with any more we like and certainly cant decide on a favourite.

Thats aside from the fact that we cant work out the middle names, as they must be family names but none of them seem to go together very well! :o

From your list Alexandra is my favourite too. The other two are lovely names but a bit popular for me. Also, I think that if you choose Isobel she will have to spend the rest of her life spelling it as there are so many variations.

THanks all.

I see the point about Isobel/Isobelle/Isabelle etc!

I like Alexandra the best I think but the others have all shortened versions of their names (think Beth for Elizabeth for eg) and I dont really like Allie, Alex or Lexie.

Maybe we should wait and see what she looks like, but then some friends did that and they had to pick her name on the way to register her when she was almost on the limit for registration! Arrggh!!

Alexandra is a lovely name but if you don't like Alex you may want to choose another. Even if you don't shorten it, someone else will whether its at school, college, uni or work.

I like Elizabeth but dont think there is anything wrong with having a shortlist.

We have got it down to 2 and are going to see what she lloks like on the day!

If you are not sure, why not wait until you see the baby? You've still got six weeks to get to know her and find a name for her after the birth. I tend to agree with the popularity of Charlotte and Isobel (although I much prefer that spelling to any of the alternatives): but it depends on whether or not you really love either of those names. Sometimes being pregnant just isn't a great time for making decisions? Rest and eat chocolate and let the name arrive on its own!

None of those three are going to disadvantage her in later life, you haven't suggested anything I'd be worried about if you were my sister, they're all nicely normal. I think it's just a matter of having a look to see which of those three suit her best when you meet her.

I'm glad you started this thread, we're in the same boat. I was going to post something similar. My daughter is Alexandra (Alex for short) and we're looking for another traditional name in a similar vein, we don't know if it's a boy or girl, but are finding boys names easier.

Charlotte and Isobel are also lovely names, but a bit too popular for our liking. Plus, Charlotte tends to get shortened to "Charlie" and there's already a nephew Charlie.

Oh, and beware of Katherine/Kate - we love the name too, but there is possibly going to be a lot of these in 2011 because of the royal wedding. I want to avoid everyone asking me if we named her after Kate Middleton.
