What do you think of Alex?

What do you think of Alex as a girl's name? My husband doesn't like the name Alexandra but likes Alex but I'm not sure if it's okay as a girls name on it's own. What do you think?

It's lovely but I prefer it as a nn, how about Alexis, Alexa or Alexandria?

It's cute, but I'm a fan of longer names with nn (I have a long name but generally go by the shorter version, so I have a bias)

Alexis, maybe, or Alexa (admittedly not much longer!)? I really like Alexandra though and would push for that.

It's a nice name, but I do agree with the other ladies about need a longer name to shorten to Alex.
I think Alexandra is a lovely name as is Alexandria, there's always a few other possibilities, for example Alexia, Alexina, Alexine, Alexiou, Alexius, but i think these are more likely to result in the nn Lexie. x

I see it as a nickname, and also a genuinely unisex name.

I think the nicest female long forms are Alexandra and Alexandrina.

Yes Alex has become noticeably either gender.

In the media there seems to be more females than males.

My daughter is an Alexandra, known as Alex. I'm a bit old fashioned, so preferred it to be short for something. And we like Alexandra too.

There are a few other Alexes around, but most of them boys, it seems more popular for boys than girls right now, though as GabbyLoggon said, a lot of grown up Alexes are female.

I would say don't saddle her with having to flippin' EXPLAIN all the time she isn't a Mr.

choose a nice longer version and then you can still call her Alex from day 1 if you want and she can make her own choice when she's older which version to use.

I'm an Alexandra and whilst my friends generally call me Alex, Alex does not travel well and having lived overseas for many years I am Alexandra to my non-English speaking friends. Alex is a "man's name" to many.

My DS is an Alex. I therefore always assume Alex's are boys

Our hairdresser is called Alix which I always think of as a more girly

My mum and dad were going to name me Alix but changed their minds at the last minute,my mum has always wished she had been braver and gone for it.

I think its nice,and agree Alix looks more feminine.

I'm an Alexandra too and while most peopel cannot be bothered to say it and I am known as Alex, I wish people did use my full name. Alex, although nice, doesn't work as a stand alone anme for a girl.
