Hi I sent a thread through last night re Joseph or Jake?? for my 2nd boy. Firstly thanks for all your great feedback. Ok I have been thinking about the name thing all day and I think I prefer Joseph over Jake. The only thing that is bugging me is that I'm not crazy about Joe for short and its quite likely that as he gets older people are going to shorten it to this. And I prefer Jake to Joe so this is what Im confused about. Do I really want to spend the next 10 yrs correcting people that his name is Joseph and not Joe? Am I being silly? :-)

I would say you can tell people its Joseph until he goes to school, and then his friends will call him what they/he like, even if you stick to calling him Joseph. He might want to be Joe.....

My sil was adamant that her eldest son Thomas would always be Thomas, he's now 14, and is Tom to everyone, even his mum Smile

Fwiw I prefer Joseph over Jake, but also like Joe so it wouldn't be an issue for me!

I have a niece who loved and used a very 70s version of her name and hated the nn her mum had in mind when she chose it. And a DD who 'chose' a nn for herself, more a diminutive really, that would never have occurred to me, but it's lovely and I can't imagine her with any other name now, even the one I gave her.

IME if you only ever use Joseph then other people will tend to as well

i know a little boy of 9 who is Joseph and no-one calls him Joe

DP's name has a very common shortening (by common i mean most people with his name use it rather than chav common!). he HATES it and until he was at secondary school everyone used his full name.

ds2 is Gabriel, and I have found that unless people have heard me call him Gabe they always use Gabriel.

so... go with Joseph :)

my friend has a joseph and she was always very clear from the beginning that he was a joseph not a joe. I wouldn't even think of calling him joe now, it's just not his name (he's 6)
