dd in her own room

Just had to put DD is her own room she is only 10 weeks but is too big for the moses basket and we have no room in our bedroom for a cot.

She actually slept really well, much better than in our room. I woke a couple of times in the night and went in to check on her, both times i disturbed her and she ended up awake.

just wondered if anyone had advice on a monitor which i would be able to hear her breathing on? ours does not have great sound and no chance of hearing her breaths so i feel i have to go in and see her.

I don't think a standard monitor would be good enough to pick up breathing... You can get mats that you put under the mattress which will pick up movement and alarm after 10 seconds if there is no signal... I don't know much about them though.

I have a video monitor (it's the Fisher Price one that is advertised on MN sometimes... It costs £170 but I think it's worth it's weight in gold!)

I actually use mine for my 18 month old... He (like your LO) is a light sleeper and if I go into his room, I will disturb him. I can see him very clearly (with or without th elight on) I find it excellent to keep an eye on him...

My LO (NOw 4 months old) is stisll in with my room, but I think I will get one for her when she moves into her room.

thanks harimosmummy I had seen the breathing monitor mats but have also heard of some of them going off falsely which i think would make me more paranoid.

Our monitor is actually a video monitor although a cheaper version and the signal isn't great (made worse by all the electrical stuff dh insists on having in the house) however when she is asleep she barely moves and the camara/screen aren't big enough to get close enough to see if her chest is moving what to do, im sure ill come up with something

We have the BT digital monitor and it is very good, can pick up breathing. You have to turn it up to full sensitivity, full volume. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Ahh... I have a similar BT digital one, but a lower spec'ed on and the one I have couldn't detect breathing even with the volume right up...

So, the BT 150 version might well be worth investigating.

Oh, and Elliebelle, I have heard similar stories about the breathing mats and I also read that they can give false confidence....

I have an Angelcare monitor (breathing sensor mat) for dd2. We just had a BT monitor for dd1 which is now broken - saying thatwe could hear dd1 breathing over it.

We haven't had any false alarms and dd2 sleeps all over the place in her cot - it still picks up her breathing.

I think the false security is that you can turn the sensitivity up so high that it might detect vibrations that are not your baby - pretty unlikely though.

The one thing I always say about them is that you need to know what to do if the alarm ever goes off - my dh is now fully versed in how to give mouth to mouth to a baby (mouth AND nose).

It has given us peace of mind with dd2 - we were freaked when dd1 stopped breathing after she was born - and I still don't know why we never bought a breathing monitor for her! It would have saved us waking constantly at night to check on her (evern though she was right next to our bed!)

I also have the same 150 BT digital monitor and it is excellent - you can totally hear baby breathing with the sound on full.

I'm paranoid about my ds being in his own room so this monitor has been great and given me all the reassurance i need. The sound is brilliant, and the extra functions are great too. I love it and would definitely recommend to anyone.
