Knitting with two yarns

Ok, I'm attempting a pattern which means I have to join in a yarn and knit in a different colour. I have tried it and it came out ok but when I turned it over the yarns were all loose at the back. How do you knit with 2 yarns and keep it all neat & tidy?

Also, should I cut off a long enough piece of wool for the 2nd thread or do it from the ball?

What I always do is break the yarn from the first ball, leaving a long enough thread to darn into the back. I then start the new yarn, again leaving a long-ish bit at the beginning. I hold the first yarn tight and then start knitting with the new one, pulling the first few stitches tight if necessary. After a few rows I then darn both tails into the back of the work.

So do you put the thread under the stitches as you knit or afterwards?

Afterwards, you actually darn them in with a darning needle, just like when you finish a ball of yarn.
