I just taught myself last week and have been to the wool shop today for some supplies. You have given me something to aim for. How did you learn to follow a pattern. I've been using YouTube for the basics but our Internet is very slow.

That little fella was mostly done in double crochet..so pretty easy once you've mastered the basic stitchs. Each body part is worked in a continuous spiral from the bottom to the top. This method is called amigurumi. Stitches the same you just start with a 'magic circle' which I found the trickiest bit to master.

Personally I used knit and crochet magazine to learn. It happened to have an amigurumi special in it the month I bought it which is how come I got hooked into these cute little critters. At the back of every issue there is a picture tutorial to most of the stitches. The patterns are also pretty well explained to get the hang of using a pattern and i could flick to the picture tutorials where i needed to. On the odd occassion backed up with a bit of youtube.

The pieces are usually small enough to work and see progress quickly. The mushroom on my profile was the first. Be aware of cute little kitties or pigs and stuff which have loads of fiddly little bits to start.

I should also say that when doing amigurumi you must use a stitch marker or you won't know where each new row begins. Personally I just use a piece of embroidery thread looped into the first stitch of the row which I move when I get to the next row.

I tried to teach myself to crochet over Easter weekend but haven't had a chance to look at it since. I'm not very good at learning by myself and need to find a group or someone patient to show me how to it.

Well done ! It is so addictive
I taught myself how to crochet and knit using books and you tube.
Once you can do the basic stitches and learn to read patterns, anything goes.
I love knitting more!
And the wool - I can spend hours in the yarn section .... Drooling at the colours and textures!

She's an amazing woman, seriously... three kids, oldest just started primary school, and somehow she's managed to start two businesses and write this truly lovely book. i kind of loathe her.

When I was going through the painful times of ex leaving me and the children, I knitted my rage
Made beautiful scarves for the wonderful friends who helped me.

Also crocheted a granny square blanket when I was stressed during my PhD.

I find this sort of thing meditative. Plus one is also creating something unique.

Try out the Ravelry website as well it's got thousands of patterns and ideas! Some are a bit rubbish but there are also some real gems in there as well...

Edwinias - I am on the long recovery from depression, and the knitting I do - and especially the knitting group I go to - are my best form of therapy too. The high point of last week for me was making knitted and crocheted sandwiches for a craft project that another knitting group is involved in. I have a huge backlog of big projects, and am knitting a tunic for me at the moment, but smaller projects are good because they are finished more quickly, and I get that buzz from completing something.
