Quick Knitting Question ...

I've just discovered I desperately need 5.5mm DPNs, so I'm going to do an online order.

I want to start making gloves. I'm assuming I'd want to make them in a fairly fine yarn? Something that works up in a 4mm? Or smaller?

And what sort of fabrics work? Wool? Cotton? Synthetics? Blends?

I figure if I'm doing an online order, I should probably get some more yarn ...

It's very aggravating, getting nearly done something (a hat I started yesterday) only to find I can't do it ...

I've got a pattern in a Sarah Dallas book that was in rowan 4-ply soft which might be a bit fine for you..look here

Did someone say.....knitting?

I would have thought 4mm would be about as big as you would want for gloves, otherwise the fingers would be a bit bulky. I would agree with bundle that 4 ply yarn might be the best bet. I think some cottons might be a bit kind of unsupple (can't think of exactly the right word) but other yarns would probably all work well. One of those Ann Budd books has generic glove patterns that you can modify. I've got it you'll be surprised to hear

What size needles does 4-ply knit on?

(Why aren't there standard numbers to denote yarn thickness?!? Grr.)

Oooh, I just found some 5mm DPNs. Could I use those instead? I've been using my size 9 Denise needles ...

Oh, and I found my Vogue gloves & mittens book, too.

The other odd thing I've been thinking about knitting is ties. DH always needs ties.

Only thing is, I want to make a tie out of eyelash yarn or similar, which probably isn't butch enough ...
