Selling in shops

I am looking to sell my home-made greetings cards in local shops. Does anybody have experience with this? How much would the retailers take out of the selling price? If they bought them from me to sell, what would their mark-up be? Any advice would be appreciated.

I used to sell trinkets in craft shops. they normally double up.

this was about 15 years ago, but i don't imagine it's changed.

The retailers will double up and will push you to drop your price to rock bottom....they after all want to make the greatest profit!

Double plus VAT I would say so card in shop is £4.25

ex VAT is 3.61

to you 1.80

or 2.99

ex VAT 2.54

to you 1.27

Thanks all, how are they with pricing - could I dictate the price - especially if I sell to more than one shop?

You can tell them what you would like to sell them for....but dont expect to get it.

Some of my cards I was offered £1.50 for by a local store.....she would then be selling them on for £3.50.

I sell them myself for £3.

Ive got a friend who owns a shop and she sells mine and takes 15%. I go back every couple of weeks and change the stock so the cards look fresh.
