These light midsummer evenings are amazing. And I hate dark winter nights.

Why can't we just convert to GMT+1 for the winter and GMT+2 hours for the summer. AFAIK we're only keeping the current system so a few Scottish farmers don't have to work in the dark on winter mornings. If they're wedded to the current system, why don't we have separate timetables for England and Scotland.

yanbu. I love this time of year, there is something so special about the light evenings. Plus it's great for the children being out in the park/garden until bedtime rather than everyone being cooped up indoors past 4pm like in the winter.

Rosieeo - I am old enugh to remember walking to school on the dark mornings - I can remember the reflective jackets we had to wear.

My parents fell out with the head teacher of our primary school as they supported it and he didn't.

TBH - even now, under GMT, ds (9) should wear a reflective jacket when he walks to school in the morning if he is going to breakfast club (and in fact, the P1s get issued with them, returned at the end of the winter) and even with GMT, he still needs to wear one for walking home on his own if he has an after school activity (quid pro quo for being allowed to walk on his own) as here in Glasgow it can already be that awkward - and dangerous - twilight at 4.30 on overcast days.

Well I don't, I love dark evenings. I like coming home from work in darkness, feels like the part of the day that is dictated by others is over and it's my time. Light evenings give no differentiation.

Don't know what I think really. I hate that it gets light so early and the bloody birds are already chirping around 3am. Makes it much harder to get back to sleep after my regular 5am loo trip. Argh! Wish I could stop waking up at 5am. Think I need to try the Baby Whisperer's 'Wake To Sleep' method on myself. Anyway, I digress.

But it still won't be light til 9pm in winter, you do realise that? Maybe light til 5pm if you're lucky... But dark til about 9am or 10am in the morning. Nice.

I am up at 6.30am and for most of the year it is dark......wouldn't want it to stay dark till 9am, no way

and I HATE getting up in the dark with every fibre of my being screaming that it is the middle of the night!!!

I think we should stay on BST and not change the clocks in the autumn. I can remember the trial when they abandond GMT. We did go to school in the dark, but got home when it was still light(ish!). I think there probably would be less accidents. In the mornings (darkish), children go straigh to school and get there safely. After school children tend to dawddle, mess about and don't go straight home so need the daylight to keep safer.

I am too young to remember double summertime.
I think they had it during the war to maximise the hours of daylight for farmers, and to reduce accidents in the blackout.

If we stayed on BST would we stay in line with the rest of Europe?
