Scary Monsters

DD 3yo has been waking up every night and screaming that she's scared of the dark as the monsters will get her. Starts about 1am and goes on till 5ish.

Telling her there are no monsters didn't work, leaving the night light on didn't work either. So last night I gave her a broom and told her to bop the monsters on the head should any come near her.

She called out for me twice in the night but she was hardly awake and didn't sound scared so I left her and she went back to sleep.

My mother thinks I'm nasty for encouraging her imagination. But we all had a better nights sleep and dd is much happier.

YANBU.

The monsters cannot get into our house because the dog eats them all before they get past the door. He loves eating monsters

yanbu... when ds was little we had a 'monster spray'.. just a spray bottle with water monster killer in it for him to spray the monsters if they came... then he got spotty, a monster guard dog (toy) who sat on hi9s bed and ate the monsters.. then he got into dr who.. who always shows up if there are monsters so he doesnt need to worry about them anymore

I would try a technique that my friend uses and says works for her children.

Monsters are NOT ALLOWED in this house because Mummy is the BOSS.

From my own nightmares as a child, being told monsters are not real is useless because I KNEW they were real. Now you have 'admitted' they are real and given her a way of dealing with them.

Well done.
