it was also my DH's childhood home so he, unbelievably, has lived there for over 30 years!!! (on and off) Now it's officially on the market and strangers are tramping around, and I feel incredibly sad every time I even think about it. I've never been attached to bricks and mortar in the slightest before and I know change is not a bad thing. But it's hard to express just how down I feel about something as silly as this. It doesn't help that DH is miserable about it too so we both bring each other down when we talk about it!

do you have to move?

if so hope you find buyers you feel happy with, it will be nice to think of a new family cherishing the place?

Yes, we have to move, unfortunately. Really no option to stay

It's a good idea to think of a new family in the place (and a line I've used on my DH!!) but we haven't started a family of our own yet and though it might seem silly I think both of us had hoped we might be able to bring up our own family here one day.

It's very sad isn't it? We moved from our old house where we'd been for 13 years and I hated selling it, particularly as it went to an obviously rich couple who had the money that we didn't to do it up. It was a lovely stone house and most definitely a family home, but sadly it was just the two of them. Our children had all been born from there, and it was our first proper marital home. Our new house (we've been here 4 years), still doesn't have the same feel, and we know we won't be here forever.

We're not that far away and I still have a twinge when I drive past it, and have to avert my eyes when I go to see our previous next door neighbours, I can't bear to think what's been done to it - I'm sure it's all fine, I'm just sad we couldn't afford to keep it.

I'll feel like this when I have to leave my current home where we came just after we were married and all the DDs were born. We'll have to move everntually (having 3 DDs has seen to that!) but it will break my heart.

I also will be heartbroken when we have to sell my parents' home - they moved there when I was 6 months old. I hope that's long way in the future

You have my sympathy.

I'm just about to move out of the first home I bought. I've been here 23 years and been married twice from this house... had DS1 and adopted DS2 and DD. I feel as though I am a real part of the house's history.
I hope I will create as many memories in our new house.
I hope you and your DH will in your new home too.

No, YANBU. When we moved after 9 years, from a house that I knew we'd outgrown, I still felt awful. Our new home was comparatively massive and had a lovely big garden, which I desperately wanted, but I still dissolved into pathetic tears one night when it really hit home that we were starting again in a totally new area which we didn't know, away from all the familiar things around us. It was realizing that there were no friendly restaurants to compare to our last area that really did for me, stupidly enough!

Almost 8 years later, I now love our 'new' house, and feel fond of the memories of our old one, but don't miss it in the same way. OP, I'm sure you'll feel the same when some time has passed. It is hard, though, I sympathise.

We were in a similar position to you 3 years ago. DH had lived there for 40+ years and I had lived there for all our married life (14 years)
Initially I was heartbroken. In a way we were helped by having a praticulaly fraught time selling the house (I'm not wishing this on you by the way) so when we did move we were so delighted that things hadn't fallen through again our primary emotion was relief.

3 years on I love our new home, it is a much better house for us and making it our own has been a joint venture (still a work in progress!)
I hope your sale goes smoothly and you find a house you love.
