I arrived at my mums this morning to leave DS to go to work. I could tell mum wasnt well, so I told her to ring work if she felt no better and I would come home.

Well she obviously didnt, so she rung work and they let me go home but I could tell they werent best pleased about the situation.

I explained that DH was working away so he couldnt pick up DS and my sister was working so I had no other option.

So AIBU to leave work early in this situation? DS is 15 mo old and runs you ragged when you are well never mind ill.

Work just made me feel really uneasy about the situation. BTW childcare is sorted for tomorrow, but today was just a one of emergency type situations.

Employers out there, how would you feel about the situation?

I'm not an employer - but you are perfectly entitled to take emergency dependency leave in this situation. It will be unpaid but you are always entitled in those sort of circumstances.

Really tricky one, obviously you had to go and collect him and you had no alternative. But time off because your child is ill is discretionary ( certainly in my education field ) and would then count as unpaid leave. As you say it was an emergency and any understanding employer should be fine with that.

I just feel really awkward going back tomorrow. I dread to think what was said once I had left
