Me or the Plumbers?

Our header tank was overflowing into an overflow tank which was then running out of a pipe halfway up out outside wall. Got the plumber in to sort the ballcock (phnarr) thingy in the first tank to stop it overflowing. They did this, charged £70 but it only lasted a couple of days, so they came again (for free) & replaced it.

About a month later (Thursday) there was water coming through the ceiling & down the walls of the room underneath. Called plumber. They came & said the ballcock thing had been set too high so the tank had filled up & overflowed onto the loft rather than into the overflow tank. Looked embarassed when I pointed out it was their third attempt at mending the fecking thing. They brought round a wet/dry vaccum & dehumidifier straight away.

Anyway, this morning there's £100 cheque in the post 'in full & final settlement'. Do I accept it or wait to see how the ceiling dries out?

don't cash it! I would send it back, saying that you expect the costs of sorting it out to be far higher and will let them know what they are as soon as the ceiling has dried out and a proper assessment can be made.

Our tank overflowed and soaked walls in hallway.
After a couple of weeks some of the wall paper split and bubbled as it dried out and staining came through in two adjacent downstairs rooms.
WWWaaaaayyyy more than £100.
Thank them but say you are returning it without prejudice to your final claim for full repair and restoration of the room or rooms damaged.
Tell them you will give it until it has fully dried and then you will assess. They will be welcome to come and have a look too

Is it likely to be worth taking further? They must have insurnace, is it easy to access?

I would wait as i know how much dehumuidifers cost to run!! Can you ring the electric company and ask how much electric was used when it was running? When my house flooded or as my insurance company put it (had an escape of water) The company who dried everything out worked out my electric costs and sorted it for me!

Ooo, hadn't thought of that Lottie. Runs to turn off dehumidifier.

I suspect the real damage will be minimal, this house is old and has been through the wars already. Any insurance assessor is probably just going to laugh if it's just a couple of water stains. But I'll hang on to the cheque for now, just in case.
