To feel like frothing at the mouth when I hear the term "rod for your own back"?

I never used to have any response whatsoever to that term.

but I've heard it used in such unintelligent contexts so often since having children, that I become blinded by fury and unreason when I hear it now.

Even the word "rod" sets me twitching...

Re co-sleeping, bfing, bfing to sleep, bedtimes, food.... I have had it used in anger to me many times. But then again I am very very lax

My mum said it once when I let my then-three year old get down without finishing his comedicly gargantuan portion of spag bol. She actually said "He will learn that if he's not hungry he can leave his dinner!"

And I replied "Yes! God forbid he should have the slightest chance of NOT being clinically obese like every adult in out family, eh? I mean, refusing to eat because you're not hungry, what outlandish idea is this? He might end up with something as dreadful as a healthy body mass index!"

Actually, since hearing my mother's views on how I should raise ds1, I have a very good insight into why I am the way I am!

Ex said it all the time when 8 yo DD was a baby. I used to fall asleep bfing in bed and put her back in her cot when I woke up. That was his main grumble.

Never mind that he spoiled his sons rotten. Now they are aged 20 and 19, he has made a rod for his own back. They use him at every opportunity and show him no respect at all. He's now a sad and lonely old man.
