i was talking to a friends neighbour today who has just found out that her husband has been having a affair with someone at work, they are both firefighters (one male and one female, the story is not that juicy)

both of them have been singed of sick from the service on full pay, her with depression and him with stress. meanwhile the wife would only be given ssp so cant afford to take time of even though she would like to go away for a few days and get her head together.

it might be against the rules of their employment to become involved with a co-worker and it might be necessary to remove both of them from the work place while their bosses try to decide how to handle it.

not at all nice for the wife, must agree.

So their emotional lives have fallen apart then? Well that would be both a cause for depression and stress for me so I think it's very sensible they are signed off. I don't someone rescuing me from a fire who hasn't got their mind fully on the job! It's hardly their fault that the wife only gets ssp. The righhts and wrongs of the whole situation are a different matter of course.....

As far as the signing off goes - YABU.

They should be signed off but I don't think that they should be paid for it.

ANYONE who has depression/stress severe enough that they can't function at work should be entitled to be signed off by their dr and to receive sick pay (if their job offers sick pay of course). It is wrong that some people on this thread haven't received that help, not wrong that these 2 have.

riven - that sounds awful. was your GP not happy to sign your DP off? I'm sorry you had what sounds like such a rough time.
