AIBU?

to not tip the window cleaner every week??

Was having a conversation with a neighbour about general this and that and our window cleaners came up - she mentioned that she tips them every week. I didn't ask how much but i don't do this Am I mean and tight fisted? I do at xmas but not every week surely? I really don't know if this is what you are meant to do, it's never come up before, and my windows still get cleaned!

So AIBU not to tip them? And what do you do for other things e.g hairdressers (I'd say yes), taxis (depends), waiters etc(yes).

I'd hate anyone to think I was taking advantage of them by not tipping but how on earth are you supposed to know????

Yikes. You have your windows cleaned every week? .
I'm not good at tipping. Always waiters, usually taxis (will round up), but rarely hairdressers (though will leave a few pounds for the person who washed my hair). I tend to assume with window cleaners (on the rare occasions I employ one) that their rates reflect the fees they want to charge - ours is self-employed so tipping would seem strange.

i agree with you- do not tip my window cleaner but we never keep the same one for long!!!-

always give waiters/waitresses a tip and the hair dresser-

TBH cannot afford too many tips its all expensive enough xxxx

You get your windows cleaned every week? Think they are doing OK already! Ours are monthly and get tipped at Christmas only.

Other things - agree with you, but depends on overall cost - I have a beautician who comes to my house and is relatively low cost so she always gets tipped, but at the expensive beauty salon, I don't tip. And in restaurants, I often give 10% of the food bill, not the drinks, unless it is exceptional service. But I accept that may be deemed to be a bit tight...

I didnt know window cleaners got tips. I never tipped ours when we had one. Had to stop him because every two weeks was far too often. We do them ourselves now about twice a year which is IMO more than adequate!

Gosh, I didn't even know they could come every other week. Don't think ours would even if we paid them - every 6 weeks here although once a month when we lived elsewhere. That was often enough!

In answer to the question no I don't tip window cleaner - never thought to do so as they are usually self-employed so the fee goes straight to them anyway.

As for the others, tip hairdresser waiters and taxis most of the time (unless they have been crap).

Also tip AA men although thankfully that isn't a regular thing!

I've lived in my house for 4.5 years and I can't remember the last time they got cleaned. Honestly - aren't they self cleaning?

I hate tipping. I work in the NHS helping people regain their health and independece and I never get tipped (not allowed - it's even in our code of ethics!)

I hate the fact that some industries do. I work on the 'will I ever see this person or eat here again' rule. So I never frequent the same place twice!

maybe our windows are too clean... pay £7.20 every other week. To be honest, when we moved in (about 18 mths ago) I saw the window cleaners in the road and asked them to do our house too. I didn't think to ask the frequency, so they have always come fortnightly. I'd be ashamed to ask them to come less now Am rubbish with stuff like this, if they said they needed to come weekly I'd probably say ok

I pay the window cleaner what he asked for when he negotiated doing the windows.

If he wanted more he should have asked.

I never tip the window cleaner (who comes every month-ish). I don't really like tipping but do it in restaurants and taxis because it is expected.

lazyhen, are you an OT?

It has never crossed my mind to tip the window cleaner, I assume that he is asking the price he wants. I would like to abolish all tipping.

I never tip mine ('cept Christmas).

I am rubbish at all that though. I don't know what's 'done' and what isn't at all.

I've never thought about tipping my window cleaner but then again i never seem to have any cash in the house when he calls and have to get DH to send a cheque to window cleaner.

Ours get done every 6 weeks. If ours were every week that would be £520 per year for clean windows

Bumperlicious · 16/07/2008 22:45

We don't have one, DH risks his life by leaning out of our 1st floor sash windows to clean the bird poo off

£7.20 every other week?
Do you live in the Crystal palace? Our last window cleaner was £2.50.
It never occured to me to tip him.
He left and sold his round but the new chap won't come up our street as we have no gardens and its like that Hovis ad hill, so he needs a wedge for his ladder but said our hill was too much for him!
So dp does it every couple of months up his builders ladders Don't pay him though!

Tip them every week? Is that not what you do when you pay them? Isn't tipping for when they do a great job? If they do a great job every week then either what you pay reflects that or you need to pay them more!
