about his birthday pressies

My SiL asked me what we wanted for our DSs 2nd birthday, so I asked her to get him a new lamp to match his room, she agreed with this and then turns up today with his pressie of 3 DVDs
They did the same thing at xmas, they asked me, I said In The Night Garden stuff so they got him an easel which he already had.I just don't get it, why on earth ask me, then agree, then get something totally different. Why not just get what it is they want to get him and not ask me. I am now lacking a lamp which other people would've got him if I'd have known they weren't happy with getting it.
I sound soooooooo damn petty but it just pees me off and hubby just doesn't get it!!!

Neither do I really, I would never ask what to buy a child for a present, and if I am honest I would never buy a child funiture either. Why don't you say to hem in future (in a nice way ) oh, he will be happy with whatever you buy.

We sort of have issues so I suppose I'm taking it too personally and seeing things that aren't really there!!
I ask my friends what to get for their LOs cause I wouldn't want to get them something they really don't need (as I now have 8 Bob DVDs!)

I've seen this from the other side. When my niece was small I always asked SIL what she'd like and I was either told something SIL would like (like the lamp, doubt whether 2yo would be too excited sbout that?) or something that was really hard to get hold of. Now I don't ask.

Have to agree, a lamp isn't really a present that a 2 year old would like, is it? Sil probably thought that the dvd's would give him more pleasure.

I do know what you're saying but my problem is why ask in the first place. He has so many toys it's untrue, his bedroom and playroom are completely full, lots of it goes unused so sometimes I ask for more practical stuff. My Mum and Dad and in-laws happily get him things we need so if she'd have said no or just not asked I could've asked my Mum who would've happily got it.
He would be excited by a Thomas or Bob lamp.
