AIBU?

To really not want to square up to these people sitting outside in the car?

I live in the same road as my parents. I noticed that a car which looks like it has 3 men and 1 woman in it has been parked outside my parents house for about an hour, peering in at times. My parents have been out all day. I called them to let them know about it and my mum apparently wants me to go out and ask them who they are and what they are doing there.

AIBU to not want to do this? I'm a (small) lone parent at home with just my 7 year old dd. I don't know who these people are - they could be anyone.

My mum responded with 'oh, can't you even do that for me?'

Um I'm not sure why you can't just ask them why they're outside your mum's house? What's being a lp got to do with that?

Do you have keys to parents house? Can you pop over for a cup of tea and watch TV for a bit? No need to confront anyone but they'll see house is not empty.

Maybe go to them and say
"My brother has seen you a few times on the cctv. Can I help you"

Yes agree with domino and fwiw I can see why you wouldn't want to ask them outright as I'm assuming you've got a youbg child at home and you wouldn't want to be drawn into an argument with these people

I wouldn't confront them - I'd do what Domino says.

Yes I've got a key - I went in and put all lights on.

I'd go over take a photo of the car and occupants and then go into your parents house for half an hour - and also call 101!

You have photographed the car registration plate, right? If there s a subsequent burglary you want to have it for the police...

As others have said I would make house look occupied. Personally I would also give the car reg to 101, if they have been trespassing to look in windows.

I never thought I'd do the 'call 101' on MN but in this case, maybe. Just the sight of a police car might frighten them off. Also think your mum is being a bit U to expect her daughter to confront some random strangers.

As pp said Def get the number plate and if poss a photo, call the 101 number

I would not do it, especially not home alone with child. Your mum is being rude expecting you to go against your (probably very good) instincts.

My mum is the neighbourhood watch person and went and asked a car of people what they were doing, they gave her a card and wound up window, phone number on card so she calls it and it turns out they were undercover police on surveillance. Have your parents been dealing any drugs lately op? Grin

Are they still there, OP?

Phone the 101 number and get some advice.

I bet they are playing Pokemon Go. Grin
If there is a Pokemon gym close by then they could be there a while.

We've been driving all over the place and stopping in random spots these last few weeks usually at midnight or later. We haven't been stopped by the police yet.....

Is a potential burglar likely to sit outside the house they intend to burgle in plain sight for an hour?

It's probably enough to go in the house and turn on lights. Can you stay the night?

In the end they just drove off. I didn't think of the Pokemon game lol.

Around here there have been incidences of garden equipment stolen lately from garages.
