Invited mil to come and stay over the bank holiday weekend as in come up on Friday and go down Monday. Don't really get on with her and find her easier to cope with in small doses. Anyway she rang last night and said that it was not worth her coming for just three days but would like to come up on the Thursday and go on the Tuesday because she would save £30. She lives in London and we live in Yorkshire. Hmm

Firstly I do not want her to come for that long as it will be down to me to entertain her whilst DP is at work (retail so will be working the Monday) and secondly I have booked to have the Friday off as I have not had anytime off from work since a long weekend away in January and the whole company is currently going through redundancy. I find out on the 3rd if I have a job - so would quite like to have the Monday to just chill.

DP doesn't seem to think this is a problem as it is not set in stone but I can see it happening and it being left to me to entertain her. AIBU (probably am though)?

Just leave it longer after this visit until the next one?

'Hi Mum. Unfortunately I cannot get the time off and 3rd rock has plans on both the other days so nobody will be here for you'.

First, you need to talk to DP and explain why you don't want her for longer. Then he can tell her you're out on the Thursday til late, so it isn't convenient. You need your down time. I used to hate my mil coming for a whole week (fortnight once, right after I'd had a massive accident and had just gone back to work, I was so upset!) and yes, it was me had to entertain her while DP went off to work.

Tell her quickly, she'll be buying tickets!

Just say it's not convenient, you have other plans for those days. Not a big deal.

Absolutely just say no. "I'm sorry but those dates won't work. Would another weekend work better instead?"

Friday ( late) till Tuesday would be a fair compromise. If she gets van afternoon train, then that gives you the day to yourself. Or maybe DH could take a days leave?

Yes, it should be your DP who tells his mum it's not convenient.

Tell him you have plans and if he agrees to have his mum over on Thursday, then you won't be around to entertain her.
